Ricochets are always a possibility. We must minimize their potential, but there are too many variables in natural settings to guarantee no ricochets. An indoor range is the only place we can control all the variables.

The museum at Petersburg VA has two examples of rounds hitting each other in flight ....

A remarkable event in its own right, but then image the probability of FINDING those two twin bullet impacts and getting them into the collection.

I’ve seen one other impact like that, but don’t recall which Civil War museum it was at.

You’ve got to admire the courage of the troops who stood and continued fighting in the midst of gunfire like that.

A hand full of us base police we're drug out on our day off to the base pistol range to fire thousands of rounds of ball 38. We were using S&W combat Masterpiece's fireing at 25 yards at an angled steel backstop. Not even a target. Just keep shooting. Told us the ammo had poss able defects. If it didn't fire wait 10 seconds and unload. If it didn't fire and you rotated the clynder, and realized it in time, throw the revolver down range and yell. We we're standing, just shooting off hand. I was reloading and happen to glance at the shooter on my left. He fired his last round and turned his head toward me. In that instant a thin red line, like a knife cut, appeared across the middle of his forehead. A ricochet. His bullet. He said the expression on my face scared him more than the thought of how close that round had been to his temple. Range Master said just keep shooting. Two days, all day, half a dozen guys and not one bad round. Not a trip to range I don't think about that incident. Ricochets happen.
