The odds are better than even that these “good folks” were part of a gypsy clan.

Long before Hitler was exterminating the Jews and the mentally handicapped, he was rounding up gypsies and ‘offing’ them, for drain on the state that they represented. In addition to their thievery, they lived in wagons and never stayed in one place long enough to be taxed.
Interesting story: My insurance guy processed a claim for a young gypsy woman once. While filling out papers he asked again for her social security card number and found it in his stack of papers as she handed her card to him. The numbers didn't match! She said, ‘Oh, I gave you the wrong card.’ Bingo! When Gypsies die, they don't report it to anyone, just bury them in the woods and keep their social security identities alive and receiving. This woman was collecting social security for her dead mom, aunt and grandma in addition to her own. This might also explain why some of them claim to be incredibly old.

They aren’t gypsies. They’re Mexicans. Likely a couple of illegal parents who’ve had children here. Just doing the job Americans won’t do.

They looked like gypsy’s to me, is there a Carnival in town?
One wonders the true value of the Jewels. Jewelry stores mark up prices at least double sometimes much more.
They probably fenced for around $2,000 dollars.

Thus the word “gyped” when referring to being cheated.
