Paul Walker -- best known for his role in "The Fast and the Furious" movies -- died Saturday afternoon after a single-car accident and explosion in Southern California ... TMZ has learned.
The accident happened in Santa Clarita -- north of Los Angeles -- and according to multiple sources connected to Paul ... the actor was in a Porsche when the driver somehow lost control and slammed into a post or a tree ... and then the car burst into flames.
Several of our sources -- some who are still at the scene of the accident -- tell us Paul and another person in the car were killed. Law enforcement is still on the scene, and we're told the L.A. County Coroner's Office is on the way.

This is a hoax.
A hoax that made Drudge?
It was thought to be a hoax but it’s true.
I saw others saying it was a hoax but it’s made headlines on Drudge right now!
Its unfortunately true..he was the passenger in the car..he did good work, raising money for Typhoon victims..may he rest in peace
Now it’s not a hoax.
That’s right. Drudge confirms things like this.
I guess I’m not up with some things because I had never heard of him or his movies. LOL
I see that he was a decent guy.
RIP
Sadly, no.
Local news in LA giving a lot of coverage to the story.
Not a hoax, true.
He was only 40. Some people seem to have it all - good looks, talent, good health. But, you just never know what will happen. Such a shame.
Rest in peace, Paul.
Just wanted to add: In addition to Fast & Furious, he starred in a family-friendly movie called “Eight Below.”
Horribly tragic. One of the decent people in Hollywood. Now there is one less. Ugh! Prayers to his family.
Went out like James Dean.
That’s right. I hadn’t thought of that.
According to the news tonight, it’s not a hoax. What is really sad is that he was the passenger in the car. A “friend” was driving him to some kind of charity gig for one of his charity organizations.
Sad irony. RIP.
Haven't we seen this movie before ... ?
Just sayin'
IDK about newer Porsche’s, but the older models were very unforgiving once the rear end started to slide.(Oversteer)
One of the reasons I’ve always opted for BMW’s and Corvette’s is that they don’t suffer from oversteer the way the Porsche’s do or did and that it was actually easy and fun to powerslide thru turns while the Porsche would not allow you to accelerate thru a turn in such a manner.
If you tried, you would suddenly be going backwards and often at a high rate of speed with zero control of the car.
Like I said, very unforgiving as they were tail heavy due to the rear engine design.
Once that back end got loose, all you could do is hold on and pray.
With most other Canyon Carvers, you can control the slide with the throttle. And the rear end would lose traction gradually and not suddenly and with no warning like the Porsche’s making it a lot easier to recover from overaggressive driving thru the turns.
Nothing more fun than an early morning drive on Highway 1 in Marin County. No one on the road and as you powerslide thru turn after turn with a wisp of tire smoke curling up into the still morning air, you would catch a wiff of tire smoke if the top was down. Smells almost as good as Hoppe’s #9
Early morning runs to Muir Woods, Stinson Beach, Mt. Tamalpais are a blast and the views are stunning.
On a clear spring morning, you can see the snow capped Sierra’s from the top of Mt. Tamalpais which is on the Calif coast, 200 miles away from Tahoe.
And looking South, it looked like you could almost reach down and pick up the Golden Gate Bridge as if were a small scale model.
