Fewer American high school students smoked cigarettes in 2012 compared to 2011, according to a study released Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But, at the same time, more high school students were smoking cigars, pipes, electronic cigarettes and hookahs.
Overall, 23.3 percent of high school students (grades 9-12) said they had used a tobacco product at least once in the 30 days before they were surveyed in 2012, said the study published in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. That was down from the 24.3 percent who said they had used a tobacco product at least once in the same survey in 2011.
But while the percentage of high school students smoking cigarettes dropped from 15.8 percent in 2011 to 14.0 percent in 2012, the percentage of high school students saying they used some other means to consume a tobacco product increased.

A hookah-smoking caterpillar has given them the call.
Has anyone noticed that smokers are often thin and that non-smokers are often fat?
Maybe people just tend to have heart attacks? Maybe neither the smoking nor the obesity is quite as a big a deal as the Nanny State would like to believe.
Yep and smokers won’t quit (especially the female smokers) because they were afraid they would gain weight.
As American gets dumber, we can expect this I guess
The vast majority were young Hollywood starlets who were amazingly thin. I'm pretty sure they smoke because it helps them look the way they "have to".
What goes in a hookah?
Flavored tobacco called Shisha is smoked in a hookah.
My kids have one. They buy $20 or $30 worth of tobacco and it’s the center of the party with their friends for a couple of weekends then it sits in the corner for a month until one of them decides to go across town to the smoke shop for more shisha.
Thanks! I had no idea.
Materials normally smoked.
I wanted to start smoking so I could lose weight but hated the taste and mess. I just didn’t have the willpower.
Depends on the price she's asking....
All my life I didn’t smoke. A few years ago my grown son, daughter, and son-in-law were having a cigar with some Triple Sec while we were sitting around a nice fire at the lake. They got me to try one. Bad move - now I love them. They have all since stopped smoking them, but I still have one now and again. I especially love the chocolate flavoured ones!
I was clueless about it until earlier in the year. There’s a lump of some kind of camel dung (maybe?) charcoal about an inch and half square that they have to light on the stove. That thing goes into a container and the tobacco sits on top or below, can recall, separated by a screen.
When they do the puff thing the draw forces the heat onto the tobacco and lights it. It’s so moist it won’t burn on its own.
I tried it a couple of times, noting to write home about.
A hookah is for social smoking. It sits in the center of the room and the hose gets passed around.
I think it’s more a fad than anything. Certainly not going to replace cigarettes for those who must smoke.
I used to go to similar parties but the “tobacco” was a lot more expensive.
Lots of kids are using electronic cigs, and the government is starting to panic, as they are losing the tax revenue off cigarettes...what will the sick children do without the cigarette tax?/s to support their health care programs,
What ever the caterpillar wants.
They are not smoking cigars, they`re smoking “blunts”. Look that one up people, ranks with terms like “purple drank”.
Hookah smoking up among high school students? Last week I pulled up next to a Grandma smoking a Hookah in her damn car! And I’m pretty sure it wasn’t “tobacco”.
