A student from a Christian university in Oregon ditched the privacy of the confessional and went public about his faith, writing in the school newspaper: "I am an atheist. Yes, you read that correctly, I am an atheist."
Eric Fromm, 21, a senior at Northwest Christian University in Eugene published his thoughts about not believing in God in the Beacon Bolt, the student-run online newspaper -- despite the fact that his university is a Christian school.
Although Fromm didn't share the religious beliefs as the school, he said in his post he decided to enroll because Northwest Christian had a "solid communications program."
"Before I enrolled, I visited the campus to make sure that the chapel services were comfortable enough that I could fulfill the requirement," he said. "No one was speaking in tongues or handling snakes, so I decided to stay."
But Fromm didn't feel at peace.
"Every day I'm burdened by the fact that my peers might reject me because I'm different from them. I won't be rejected because of my race or social class, but simply because of the fact that I don't believe in God -- because I am an atheist," wrote Fromm in his post.
However, the support he received from the school, from friends, and even online came as a surprise to him.
"I was expecting for it to be non-accepting and I was very afraid of it," Fromm told ABC News.
"Eric's story within the blog post isn't a surprise to us," said Jeannine Jones, director of university relations at NCU. "Eric and his journey to his faith is central to our mission."
According to NCU's website, the school's mission is to "foster wisdom, faith and service through excellent academic programs within a Christ-centered community."

Motivated by the same fifth column mentality as Sandra Fluke attending a Catholic school to complain about the lack of free birth control, no doubt.
If this doesn’t get him sufficient attention, he could always try streaking through campus.
He lied on his application for admitting , throw him out
If he were “merely” an atheist student on campus, I might accept his gee whiz (or “I’ll write an expose piece”) mentality but he sought out a leadership position.
“I’m special, so special.
I got to have some of your attention, give it to me!”
“OK, we’re all watching you, now. Go ahead and do your little thingie.”
This is how the Rino’s penetrated the republican party, deceit.
Once they get imbedded it is difficult to get them out, you know like a tick, that can infect the whole body with disease.
if he wants more attention, he can claim he’s gay.
Who would’ve thought that an atheist could be so lacking in character?
And he learned something about how tolerant the Christian community is.
We all know that the liberal stereotype is that Christians are intolerant and hateful. This dude found out that he was not villified or shunned and he admitted to being surprised. Very interesting experience. More liberals should get out of the Upper West Side or West Hollywood and see how accepting and tolerant Christians in flyover country really are.
So why the heck did he go to a christian school? Why didn't he just go somewhere else?
The first step on the road to hell. He sought publicity, not peace.
Or go 'Full Klinger' and put on a dress.
Oooooh, tell us more. We’re dying to hear more about your life-changing conversion to atheism! You must feel so oppressed! You’re like a civil-rights historical leader now, like Martin Luther King, Jr.! How brave you are!
He’s playing the school. He’s rewarding them for being so accepting of his atheism. It’s just classical operant conditioning. The school leaders will congratulate each other on their tolerance and tell each other that maybe they can convert this guy. They are being played for suckers.
The word fromm in German means pious. Ironic.
Why didn’t he just go to pretty much any other college in the country.
