Sporting a brace on his left knee, Mariota turned in his worst performance of the season in Oregon's loss to Stanford, its first of the year. He finished with negative rushing yards for the first time this season and could not get the Ducks on the scoreboard until the fourth quarter, when he threw two touchdowns. The comeback effort fell short after Oregon could not recover a second onside kick.

Marcus Mariota QB Oregon Jameis Winston QB Florida State Johnny Manziel QB Texas A&M Bryce Petty QB Baylor AJ McCarron QB AlabamaI can't help but mention that two of the frontrunners are from from Texas. The last two winners, of course, were Texans: Johnny Manziel and Robert Griffin III.
State pride aside, I don't see a repeat for Johnny Manziel, although the loss to Auburn doesn't seem so bad in retrospect, and I think Baylor's Petty may stumble with the tough schedule ahead. As things stand right now, Winston looks like the favorite in the wake of Oregon's loss last night.
Thanks very much.
If Bryce Petty (still a longshot in my estimation) pulls this off, I'll be very happy. Having Baylor gain national prominence is great since it drives liberals crazy given that Ken Starr is the university's president.
Even the disreputable New York Times seems to grudgingly admire what's happening in Waco, In a Chaotic Game, Baylor Leaves Its Past and Oklahoma Far Behind:
The home crowd assembled early in the parking lots, more than four hours before kickoff. Smoke rose from grills. Plates filled with brisket. The Bears issued more than 400 news media credentials, a record. Ken Starr, the university president and former federal judge widely known as the special prosecutor in the case against President Bill Clinton, led a group onto the field, where it formed a tunnel as players sprinted out through smoke.
It was a Texas Forever kind of night.

After Mariota’s choke last night, I think the top three contenders are, not in any order, Jameis Winston, Johnny Manziel and Bryce Petty.
I do not think McCarron is good enough as QB by himself that he should win the Heisman.
I wholeheartedly agree. McCarron does deserve credit for being a solid team player and. if you will, "coloring within the lines" of the impressive system that Nick Saban has implemented.
The other three are real difference makers to their teams and go outside the box when circumstances warrant, sometimes to the frustration of the coaches no doubt. :)
scratch Mariota after last nights loss never mind the fact he now has a partially torn knee ligament...
Mike Evans, Manziel’s favorite receiver should be on the list...
my bad- sprain for Mariota, not a partially torn ligament...that’s ext...
It is hardly a choke when you are playing hurt.
Since 2000, quarterbacks have dominated those getting the trophy. Reggie Bush (USC) and Mark Ingram (UA) have been the two exceptions. The last wide receiver was way back in 1991 when Desmond Howard (UM) took home the metal. The integrity of Wikipedia, like Snopes, is always suspect but for things such as Heisman Trophy winners, it's a good resource.
Manziel has also played hurt with a shoulder and knee.
It was not known until yesterday nationally that Mariota was playing with an injured knee.
my comment still applies....it ain’t a choke when you are playing hurt
Manziel’s numbers are better than last year when he won the award. I don’t like the arrogant little prick but he’s the best quarterback in the country. No one else is close.
