British and Portuguese media now report that the leading suspect is Euclides Monteiro, an immigrant who was a restaurant worker at the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz, which is where the nearly four-year old Madeleine McCann was last seen. Monteiro was fired shortly before her disappearance and may have kidnapped the girl as an act of revenge against his former employer, according to the Portuguese daily Correio da Manha.

Another theory is that Monteiro stumbled upon Madeleine when he was robbing her parents room. Monteiro was a heroine addict, reports the Daily Mirror, and was fired for stealing from the resort

Shouldn’t be too hard to crack a heroine addict.

Shouldn’t be too hard to crack a heroine addict.

Figuratively, or literally?

"[Euclides] Monteiro [an immigrant from the ex Portuguese colony of Cape Verde] died in a tractor accident in 2009."

That’s a real pity.
Cops should have been on to him sooner.

“It is disgusting they are now looking for a dead man as a scapegoat,"

The pity is they only want to close the case so pinning it on a dead guy is the simplest and easiest way. He had a history of stealing from hotel guest rooms but there was no report of any items stolen from the McCann's room.
