One of the weirdest things I’ve heard of.

Theories range from avalanche to “infrasound insanity.”

What say you, FReepers?

"We know that they are extremely advanced technologically, which suggest -- rightfully so -- that they are peaceful."

*** The other nine trekked on, and according to photographs developed from rolls recovered by investigators,***

Would not the radioactivity have caused the film to fog and be ruined?

What say you, FReepers?

"Nearly 1,000 people were injured in Russia today when a meteor exploded somewhere over the Ural Mountains."

First I've heard of this.

I’d like more info on the missing tongue. Was it just gone? Ripped or cut out?

Could be one of the group had a psychotic episode, perhaps after an avalanche , over something the woman said. Cut out her tongue, of course the others fled, taking her with.

That a latter group were wearing the clothes of a former group can be explained. If they died, and you were without clothing, of course you’d take what you could.

Or not. I just don’t buy the alien stuff. Not enough info for analysis, but a fine exercise nonetheless.

Well, yes — “aliens” has been a theory as well.

Apparently there were a lot of secret nuclear tests going on in the area by the Soviets at the time, which was attributed to the “tanning” of the skin of the corpses. Although others have said the discoloration would be normal for bodies left in the elements so long. The “missing tongue” of Ludmila Dubinina has been an enduring mystery — some say she had bitten through her tongue during whatever other trauma she endured, and it only appeared “missing” because of normal decomposition of the body.

What is odd to me is that they’d approach this with...

Over 1,000 people were injured today......

But, enough about that, let me tell you something really strange....

Well that’s it then. They got caught in one of those tests , ran for their lives.

If I’m in a tent and all of the sudden an implosion occurs, I’m ripping my way out and running regardless of dress.

Good explanation.

I’m thinking a radioactive Yeti (from the nuclear testing) got them.

In a case like this, with all the politics of the times, it's hard to get anything other than "tabloid" journalism. The fact remains that this DID actually happen, to REAL people.

A couple other links for reading if you choose:

Thanks, me too! I first heard of this about a month ago, and have been reading differing accounts. Many parts of different theories sound plausible, but none seems to satisfactorily solve the whole mystery.

Avalanche, Hypothermia, Dead hikers. The UFO stuff is idiotic.

Agree on the UFO “stuff.”

But... there is plenty to disavow the avalanche theory, not the least of which is the experience of the hikers themselves. I don’t have links handy, but I’ve read several sources that discuss this theory (better than the quick Wiki one you cite).

Article dated Feb 2013. I recall some cell phone footage, reports of broken windows and fatalities. I don’t recall the casualty count being that high but I didn’t follow it for more than a day or two.
