Update: Yahoo! Email Recycling

October 7, 2013

Allison here. We’ve recently discussed the June 2013 Yahoo! announcement indicating that the company would be recycling old email addresses, allowing users to pick them up if they wanted something simpler i.e. janedoe instead of janedoe34732. This program launched within the past several weeks, and a few users have received emails intended for the previous owner, and these emails emails contain personally identifiable information that put these previous owners at risk for identity theft. However, when Yahoo! first announced this program, they reassured users that it would not compromise their personal information or lead to ID theft.

What Yahoo! Is Doing About the Problem

IT security professional Tom Jenkins picked up one of these old email addresses, and within days, had access to the previous user’s Pandora and Facebook accounts. He knows this person’s name, address, and phone number, as well as the last four digits of their Social Security number. Web developer Scott Newman received court information, airline confirmation details, and even a funeral announcement, all intended for the previous owner.

I await the day Rush Limbuagh mentions this and then veers into a commercial for LifeLock(TM).

Has anyone had a problem with their Gmail account? I can’t use it on the web or phone. It’s just gone.

Surely, the NSA could re-route these emails to the correct people.

The new Yahoo email program sucks raw eggs. They’ve had tens of thousands of complaints about the changes over the last three weeks, and haven’t even offered their users an option to change back to the old system, which EVERYONE wants.

I’m about ready to go back to Thunderbird, it’s so bad.

I have switched to inbox.com after 15 years with Yahoo Mail. It takes forever to load, my emails are odd (format changes, saved drafts of stuff I sent), and the controls I used to use seem to be missing. Mainly, I’m tired of clicking on an email and waiting 10-15 seconds for it to display. They have ruined my favorite email...

I’m dismayed that you can no longer view messages in alphabetical order, which made it easy to sort through my inbox. And that ad on the right side of the screen—which you now have to pay money to get rid of—is annoying.
