Survival/utility vest
Backwoods Home Magazine ^ | Issue #144 • November/December, 2013 | David Eddings

There have been many articles written about so-called "bug-out bags," "grab-and-go bags," etc. All I have read about are very good. My problem is, if I needed something, I would have to rummage through the bag to get whatever I needed. I think my survival vest would be a perfect companion to the bags. Everything you might need in a hurry would be right at your fingertips, plus you could wear the vest while hiking or hunting. When not in use, it can be kept in a vehicle for other emergencies. With the vest, you always have your hands free to carry other things.

Bingo, go prone from a dead run...

then you'll know if you really want to fall on top of all that stuff you're lugging around.

Hardly inconspicuous. Would you like a big red target for the back?

Good article. I thought I had a survival vest, but it is lacking quite a few things now!

Pilots wear vests for that very purpose. Here in the mountains I prefer a Blackhawk Omega Elite Medic/Utility Vest as a survival vest. According to crash stats, there is a 90+% chance that in a crash any bag in the back will not be accessible.

great article Hugin.....I'd recommend a vest that has a large ‘back’ pocket such as bird hunters use...good for what have you. And being camo you can sew in inside pockets to fit other items without being noticeable...

I had never really given it any thought but now that you mention it, I have two Domke photographers vests which would be useful for carrying a lot of gear. They have a lot of pockets but even better, many of the pockets are large.

They are pretty comfortable to wear too, even filled with lenses, filters, batteries, camera bodies etc.

I have a fishing vest I wear on long road trips. When you go through a drive through, toll booth, etc. it’s easier to have your wallet in your chest or stomach area than to try and fish it out of a pants pocket while in the driver’s seat. Similarly, cell phone in the breast pocket, smokes, lighter, etc.

Maybe with velcro sealed pockets, but nothing like a trap-shooting vest.

For safety reasons, these weapons are carried without a loaded chamber.

For safety reasons, I ALWAYS have one in the chamber. Nothing like alerting game with racking a round or meeting a predator who does have one in the pipe.

That's why I advocate magazine fed "revolvers" (i.e. Glock, M&P, XD...etc.)

About 25 years ago, maybe 30 years ago, field and stream or outdoor life, or some magazine had made up one of these.
It was in a cotton duck game vest and they did not have the guns, and had fishing gear (lures, hooks, weights, line and leader, etc) and did have a couple of small survival blankets.

If I remember without the guns it was lighter. I wish I could find that series of stories.. it was cool back then and still would be today.

I wear a fishing vest when working out in the field to carry bits and pieces for my work, first-aid kit, extra snacks, water bottle, emergency blanket, flint and steel, etc. I wouldn’t like to spend a rainy night out in the woods, but I could. I sort of forget about it until I go into a gas station or store and they ask me “How’s the fishing?”

I appreciate the thoughtful post.

However, be advised that the vest in question at the link DOES NOT EXIST.
