I have been using POP Peeper for years to read my Gmail and Yahoo email without going to their websites.

IIRC, I had to open Yahoo Mail in the browser and use the 'keep me logged in' option for POP-Peeper to work with Yahoo mail.

The program can also be set to use your preferred email 'send' program.

gmail is better than the new y mail

the new yahoo email means I can’t open a text attachment without downloading it or putting it in “drop box” whatever that is.

The thing is ridiculous

This seems to coincide with when my iPhone started returning “cannot access server” messages when it scanned my yahoo email account. What a pain! I have no desire to change my account password on my iPhone and any other yahoo-dependent account that uses the email addy.

“Of course, internet content production has long since outrun such quaint things as newsgroups. So, in practice, it doesn’t matter. Just google for what you are looking for and take it from there, sharpening your query as results dictate.”

Your suggestion is beyond absurd. How, or why, should I “google” for say, how to replace a bobbin or find one for a Singer 15-91 antique sewing machine or how to remove a starter from a 2001 Toyota Camry and find, maybe, disparate answers [or not] from throughout the web when the answers are already available from one place and from people with the specific expertise I am looking for, i.e., a newsgroup. How is a person to participate in a church discussion group consisting of participants from around the globe by googling? Who or what does one google?

Your use of the term, “quaint” is just plain arrogant, but I presume you’ve evolved beyond lesser mortal folk.

I think you should look at email programs like Thunderbird. If you’re connected to the internet through an ISP you can set up your own email system without the need of going through a website portal like Yahoo, Google, or any of the rest.

LOL! Google will cough up a movie in under half a second (along with a lot of other stuff). I suppose you might find a vid on alt.binaries, but I'd be way too lazy to try.

Most questions have already been asked and answered on some forum or other. If you already know which forum to turn to, that's fine. But, given a little intelligence in querying, Google will either find the answer directly or lead to likely fora on which to ask.

Search is absolutely central to the internet. Even 15 years ago, when usenet was still going strong, the addition of search made its content vastly more accessible. DejaNews proved that.

Of course, the web has long since displaced usenet. Most useful content is now on blogs or other web-based fora or web-based documentation. I just start typing in the location bar, and Google takes it from there. Keeping bookmarks and such is a waste of time. How could I be sure there are not information sources out there that I don't know about?

Your use of the term, “quaint” is just plain arrogant, but I presume you’ve evolved beyond lesser mortal folk.

quaint |kwānt|
adjective
attractively unusual or old-fashioned : quaint country cottages | a quaint old custom.

Usenet might be an interesting museum to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

Maybe, like Obamacare, it was designed to fail.

Email (communications) providers... health insurance providers. Same shiite different sites. Seems like the goal is to herd the masses in one direction only, where the PTB demand and can control.

Not content to jam up the margins with targeted ads, these email sleazoids now put “sponsored” spam at the top of the inbox list. Yeah, who really pimps email addresses to spammers? Oh amen for the spam catcher spambox!!! /s It’s like the government that creates the crises for which they conveniently find solutions.

Not really sure what the issue is with Yahoo but I’m quite sure I can’t stand the new e-mail as well.

I was trying to use my Yahoo account while on the road for business last week. Three sets of failure notices later and two account lockouts later for ‘suspicious activity’ on my account that forced password changes, I just used my gmail.
