Sinead O'Connor pens open letter to Miley Cyrus

I am extremely concerned for you that those around you have led you to believe, or encouraged you in your own belief, that it is in any way “cool” to be naked and licking sledgehammers in your videos. It is in fact the case that you will obscure your talent by allowing yourself to be pimped, whether it’s the music business or yourself doing the pimping.

You ought be protected as a precious young lady by anyone in your employ and anyone around you, including you. This is a dangerous world. We don’t encourage our daughters to walk around naked in it because it makes them pray [sic] for animals and less than animals...

Whether we like it or not, us females in the industry are role models and as such we have to be extremely careful what messages we send to other women. The message you keep sending is that its somehow cool to be prostituted.. its so not cool Miley.. its dangerous. Women are to be valued for so much more than their sexuality. we aren’t merely objects of desire.

The messenger is flawed (and some of the language is NSFW), but I agree with the message. Women should not be treated as mere sex objects. The way so many show-business women present themselves is not what God intended, and it sends a horrible message to impressionable young girls. We must protect our daughters from the images and behaviors they see from so many pop stars and actresses.

“...will obscure your talent”

I think that’s the point.

Miley Cyrus is drug addicted. I don’t care how hormonal or peer-ridiculed/encouraged one could be, there is no other explanation for the deluded and atrocious behavior she has exhibited.

If she was my daughter, I’d wangle a way to get her drug tested and then go to a court and have her little ass committed as a potential danger to herself.

If she was on of my daughters, none of this would have ever happened. But since she’s Billy Ray’s daughter....

Someone has to say it!

If you trivialize and cheapen yourself... who will take you or your talent (such as it is) seriously?

If you sacrifice taste, talent, class, originality, etc. to shock value... what are you doing in a public venue and who in fact, are you but the latest and most vulgar in a long line of circus freaks??!

I know some people can say “if she was my daughter...” I’d do this or that. But as my real-life experience with my troubled daughter of 15 years ago or so, even the best of rearings and intentions cannot dictate the outcome. The forces against you and the roll of the dice on hormones, peer pressure, school environ, et al just don’t allow that sometimes. So, for me, knowing what I know now, what I said I’d do is what I would have done with my daughter then.

Hmmm. You might be right, but I think it goes deeper. Look at the tatoos, the disfigurement. THis is a deeply troubled young lady who at the very least is agonizing over issues of self esteem and initimacy.

I think it’s all down hill from here for her.

You know, there’s nothing wrong with being a Mouseketeer or Heidi or a Mary Poppins.

This was a premature flame out. Where do you go from here? Actual pornagraphy?

When Sinead O’Connor is calling you out for image, worry.

re: And this is coming from an expert in crazy.

Truth is still true, regardless of who says it. I never thought I would ever agree with Sinead O'Connor, but she apparently has gained some wisdom with the passing of the years. I don't know what she believes about anything else, but I give her credit for speaking out against what has rapidly become the new “normal”.

Well said. There are a lot of powerful people seeking the attention of our young children. Many of them do not have good intentions.

Sinead may be crazy but she has walked the walk. She shaved her head and sold her first album, pretty much, on merit.

That album was incredible by the way. Not a bad song on it.

Miley’s response is probably “Who the heck is Sinead O’Connor?”

And PS

You think you are hot and cute and it will last forever.

I was hot once too.

And I thought that made me cool and hip because people paid attention to me.

Now I can’t even get a date an engineering convention during “fleet week” sitting on a cold case of Yuengling...

Well, she’s going to find out that her dumbass explanations for her behavior are going to become a cultural joke and she the butt of many popular jokes and this will completely disillusion her. She’ll get deeper and deeper into what is causing this whole thing, then....drugs, and she’ll hit some kind of bottom. Whether that bottom is that Amy Winehouse, Brittney, Lindsey Lohan or Dana Plato, only time will tell. All I know is that there is no way in hell drugs didn’t cause this.

"Women are to be valued for so much more than their sexuality. we aren’t merely objects of desire."

Sinead O'Connor is the sexiest woman in music ... said nobody, ever.

Still, though, she does have a point.

I do not believe O’Connor wrote this “open letter”.

I am acquainted with the Cyruses, much to my misfortune. They are nouveau-riche white trash who fancy themselves as Southern society. Young miss Cyrus is simply reverting to type.
