Avenging a March loss to the U.S. in a Colorado snow storm, Costa Rica ended the Americans' team-record 12-game winning streak - three short of the world mark set by Spain.
"We were a little careless early in the game," Landon Donovan said after his first World Cup qualifier in 15 months. "We've got to do better, clearly."

Desperately wanted to watch this game, but it was only the obscure BEin network which I don’t get. How sad. Had they won they would have then qualified for playing in Brazil. Very disappointing. Classic case of overlooking an “easy” team. Now we’ll what they do against Mexico.
Of course the Mexico game was on ESPN while the USA game was not.
Mexico is really bad. They might not even make it to Brazil!
ESPN 8 "The Ocho" maybe? naaaaa
“Mexico is really bad. They might not even make it to Brazil!”
TRUE; but we’ll have 3 - 4 players unavailable for the next game.
Costa Rica has gone to the 1994, 2002 and 2006 World Cups.
Let’s not forget, a lot of people would call the United States an “easy” team.

In fact, Costa Rica defeated Mexico in Mexico City in a competitive match some time ago already, Honduras matched that feat last night.
I don’t think the USA has defeated Mexico in an actual competitive match yet in Azteca but only in one friendly. Competitive meaning where something is actually on the line such as a world cup qualification game.
http://eloratings.net/USA.htm (more or less, all of our matches)
Heck a year ago, even Jamaica beat us if one wants to harp on the USA’s low points.
Mexico can hardly score goals nowadays at least in world cup competitive games.
We play them at Columbus Ohio on September 10, Tuesday. Should be interesting.
A draw or win, I don’t see us losing.
The goal was Costly to Mexico,no really, it was Costly.
Bad loss for USMNT, but the Mexico loss to Honduras means the US should qualify...up by 5 pts over MEX for final CONCACAF WC slot with 3 matches to go....home vs Mexico and Jamaica, and at Panama.
The fact that Mexico may not qualify is awesome! Of course, it means more crap-filled condoms being tossed by Tri fans in Columbus on Tuesday.
“Thats all right, Thats OK, you’ll be mowing my yard some day” what every cheer at US-MEX game should be
Honduras has some big physical front men like Jerry Bengston and Carlos Costly...and poses problems for smallish MEX and other CONCACAF squads. HON is not as deep overall as top national squads, but if they qualify they have the bodies to get physical with Euro squads
One of the articles I believe says that whomever wins the playoff spot, 4th place will play the Oceania champ who is New Zealand.
Really?? Mexico Fans would pull that stuff at Columbus?
I know it’s said they’ve done this in Mexico and specifically Mexico City but in their home-away-from-homes in LA, Chicago or Houston?? I don’t know if they’ve even done that in Monterrey or other venues.
That I wonder about, read your post this morning, at the Honduras game, I think there was actually a sort of contraption behind the goal, this big white thing, almost looks like it was air-pumped up, where the Honduras squad did not have to confront the fans of Mexico.
Cuahtemoc Blanco was an ace for Mexico, in hindsight, he was really damn good as a scorer.
Mexico of course, we all know have Manchester United’s Chicharito Javier Hernandez as a striker but basically look like they are very green up front. Inexperienced.
Mexico throttled Ivory Coast in a friendly, Ivory Coast being good: http://us.soccerway.com/matches/2013/08/15/world/friendlies/mexico/cote-divoire/1476881/
But Mexico doesn’t have it’s scoring shoes, think the USA will win it, chance of a draw. I don’t see the Tricolor getting a win, it oughtta be very exciting.
Tuesday, Sept. 10th, 8:00 EST and this one should be on ESPN.
Folks forgive me for the multi-posts, I see Mexico’s coach Chepo was sacked, surprises me.
“Jose Manuel de la Torre has paid the price for Mexico’s dismal run of form after being sacked as head coach on Saturday.
El Tri were beaten 2-1 at home by Honduras on Friday, a defeat which saw them slip to fourth in the latest Concacaf World Cup qualification stage and leave their hopes of reaching the World Cup hanging in the balance.”

One more update I think is worth noting,
Israel 1 1 Azerbaijan today in Tel Aviv.
So other than the obvious, this was a game against basically a team with a lot of Muslims. Azerbaijan have the star and crescent on their football federation’s crest.

Israel plays at Russia on Tuesday, would seem to be a must-win.
Defense is in bad shape....And stupid yellow cards are going to leave us short-handed against Mexico...Bad...bad...night overall.
We gear up for tomorrow night, by the way, it is interesting that our former coach if people don’t know, Bob Bradley is over there coaching Egypt: when things really deteriorated in Egypt about a month ago, I watched the situation real closely. Of course, his son still plays for the Nats.
Egypt roster: http://us.soccerway.com/teams/egypt/egypt/658/
So, God protect him!
As for the USA tomorrow, our boys often play valiantly, I can see a Donovan or Dempsey goal and a 1 goal win.
Not sure though if Mexico under a new coach, manager perhaps is the correct term, may be all pumped up.
Looked for a new soccer USA thread, didn’t see it, rather than starting one myself, I’ll just use this.
Looks like it is going to be 0-0 halftime, USA Mexico, both sides I saw had one very good opportunity.

Washington Post of all things but these stories seem alright.
Also, our former coach Bob Bradley on coaching Egypt:
They, Egypt, won their game vs. Guinea today, the above article talks about Bradley’s dilemma over in Egypt.
” Egypts national soccer team often plays to empty stadiums these days, under orders from security forces. Some of the players dont get paid. And recently, many team members got stranded at Cairos airport by the 7 p.m. curfew.
In a time of revolution, even Egypts beloved soccer stars have suffered from violence and economic crisis. Now, an unusual figure an American is trying to hold the team together in its improbable quest to qualify for the World Cup despite a military crackdown that has divided the country.”
This USA Mexico game is actually pretty good and exciting.
I believe our former coach has some sort of tie to Egypt, an assistant or something, I read about it before.
