I was initially shocked to see Pennsylvania ranked as the worst sports fans. The Pittsburgh area, while rabidly supportive of the Steelers, Penguins and Pirates, is also generally polite and decent to visitors. The hospitality here is a gentle blend of southern and midwestern.

Then, I remember Philadelphia is also in our fair Commonwealth. Philadelphia is a different world entirely of oafs, boo-birds and ill-mannered slobs who should be deported to New Jersey. Yeah, we deserve such a low rating because of them.

Nonsense. The perception of Philly fans is based on oft-repeated ancient tales about Santa being booed, targeted with snowballs, assaulted with batteries, and many other embellishments. The fanbase is generally intense but basically the same as in other Northeastern cities.

They live and die by their teams. They wear their eccentricity as a badge of honor.
