Study: Happiest years are ages 23, 69

Happiness peaks at age 23 and again at age 69, according to a wide-ranging study just completed by the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics.

The study surveyed 23,161 individuals between ages 17 and 85 and found that life satisfaction was highest for those at ages 23 and 69.

According to researchers, people in their early twenties overestimate their future life satisfaction by an average of around 10 percent, before the disappointments of life kick in.

As people pass through the next decades, they face declining expectations, hitting their low point during their mid-fifties, when researchers say regrets over unrealized dreams are at their highest.

But then satisfaction levels start to rise again after age 55, peaking at age 69.

According to a report in the London Daily Mail, the U-shaped happiness pattern has been observed in more than 50 nations and across both class and financial divides, but the CEP paper is the first to examine how our expectations compare to reality at different life stages.

Based on the study, Rolling Stones rocker Mick Jagger is at the peak of satisfaction, the golden age of 69.

Age 23: "I'm gonna get a job, I'm gonna earn lots of money, it's gonna be great!"
Age 69: "I don't have to go to that crappy job anymore! I sure wish I could have retired a little earlier, but with that lousy pay, it was impossible!"

I think it is more like at age 69, you are still reasonably healthy and the kids are settled enough to bring the grandkids by to visit often.

Before 69, the kids are struggling to earn a living, get established and scrape together the time and money to get home. Plus, you may still be working.

After 69, health issues may really start to kick in.

Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we’re kids? If you’re less than ten years old, you’re so excited about aging that you think in fractions.

“How old are you?” “I’m four and a half.”

You’re never 36 and a half....you’re four and a half going on 5. You get into your teens; now they can’t hold you back. You jump to the next number.

“How old are you?”

“I’m gonna be 16.” You could be 12, but you’re gonna be 16. Eventually.

Then the great day of your life; you become 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony You BECOME 21....Yes!!!!!

Then you turn 30. What happened there? Makes you sound like bad milk. He TURNED; we had to throw him out. What’s wrong? What changed? You BECOME 21; you TURN 30.

Then you’re PUSHING 40....stay over there.

You REACH 50.

You BECOME 21; you TURN 30; You’re PUSHING 40; you REACH 50; then you MAKE IT to 60. By then you’ve built up so much speed, you HIT 70.

After that, it’s a day by day thing. You HIT Wednesday...

You get into your 80’s; you HIT lunch, you HIT 4:30. My Grandmother won’t even buy green bananas. “Well, it’s an investment, you know, and maybe a bad one.”

And it doesn’t end there....

Into the 90’s, you start going backwards. “I was JUST 92.”

Then a strange thing happens; if you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. “I’m 100 and a half.”

I’m gonna start telling people that I AM 69 so they’ll tell me I look good for my age and they’ll assume I must be happy.

Coaching high school baseball into my sixties, being able to still hit, catch and throw. One of the happiest times of my life for sure.

23 is 1/3 of 69. I wonder how 46 compares.
