You'll recall that in this space we recently told you about Chase the bat dog -- an affable and beloved golden retriever who spent much of his life fetching bats for the Double-A Trenton Thunder (Yankees). Just a few days ago, the Thunder held a retirement ceremony for Chase, who was battling a cancer diagnosis. Now, NJ.com passes along word that Chase has died at the age of 13.
"Chase was such a tremendous part of the Trenton Thunder identity for more than 10 years," said Thunder General Manager Will Smith. "His presence at Arm & Hammer Park or in the community was the epitome of the wholesome family entertainment for which we strive."

Wow, what a bittersweet story, it left tears in my eyes. To me, minor league ball that allows dogs to fetch bats and fans to picnic on the grassy knoll beyond the outfield fence is what baseball is all about.
I have no interest whatsoever in major league ball and have even turned down tickets to the Tigers on a regular basis.

Good dog! May there be forests of trees, acres of fire hydrants, cats and squirrels galore for you.

The bat dog picks up the bat at its center of gravity so that it’s balanced as he carries it.

What a beautiful story about a beautiful dog...
We picked up our very own golden retriever puppy on Saturday. He is such a love and we are having so much fun with him. His name is Francis.

The bat dog picks up the bat at its center of gravity so that its balanced as he carries it.I had to laugh when the umpire tried to hand the bat to him, it wasn't in the right spot so he dropped it and picked it up at the balance point.
What a good boy.

Congrats to you & Francis.
