In the background is the Newport Round Tower, which itself has a runic inscription that indicates it used to be the seat of the Bishop; a record of said bishopric survives in the Vatican. Anyone with a brain who's been to the thing and has seen the niches inside knows that is sure as Hell wasn't built as a windmill or any other kind of mill, although it came into use after the better-known settlement of Rhode Island.
