A double standard cannot exist in disability claims

Has “crackhead” become the disparagement de jour? Should addiction be treated any different than other disabilities?

William Halliday was a recovering addict and his employer, Geoffrey Van Toen, would not let him live that down.

Halliday had a second job as a sales agent for Van Toen Innovations, an automobile broker, checking with car dealerships to get the best deal for Van Toen’s clients.

He had been in 14 residential addiction recovery programs in 23 years, having relapsed and been hospitalized many times. He had experienced homelessness, joblessness and been estranged from family and friends. When he began working for Van Toen he had been clean for eight months and was anxious to put those unhappy days behind him. When Geoffrey Van Toen invited him for a drink one evening, he demurred, explaining his situation. Van Toen was supportive.

After a weekend relapse, he informed Van Toen, who refused to pay him his commissions until he checked into a detox program. For 11/2 hours, despite Halliday’s protests, Van Toen drove him to two detox sites. Halliday testified he felt as if he was being kidnapped. These sites corroborated Halliday’s assertion that this was not the way admissions occurred.

No. Obviously there should be no double standards when it comes to which addictions are considered disabilities and which ones aren't.

Remove ALL addictions from the list.

HA! Yeah. Right.

how about ‘sex offenders’ list?

either they’re rehabilitated, or should continued to be locked up if they’re not.

from the comments: As someone who knows the real story. The real victim here is van toen. most of what happened here is untrue. Holliday was running and building a competing company during his time with van toen and not 3months after he quit. We also know this isn’t the first time halliday has used his disability for profit and gain while harming others.
Who to believe? In any event, mistreatment is no excuse to do drugs and claim it’s a disability.

I am addicted to food and oxygen, please give me financial support for life.

lol.

Yes, we need to reward bad behavior now. That is a messed up idea.
