(Pit Bull) Dog owner charged with murder in woman's mauling
LA Times ^ | 5/30

Posted on 05/31/2013 10:24:51 AM PDT by Arthurio

Pamela Devitt was taking a morning walk through her neighborhood earlier this month when a pack of pit bulls mauled her.

The retired office manager suffered 150 to 200 puncture wounds in the fatal attack. When the first sheriff's deputy arrived on the scene in the Antelope Valley town of Littlerock, he saw Devitt on the ground with one of the dogs still mauling her.

On Thursday, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office charged the dogs' owner with murder. Prosecutors could not recall ever filing a similar murder case, but said the incident warranted such serious charges because the owner's dogs had attacked others before mauling Devitt.

DISCUSSION: Should dog owner face murder charge?

District attorney spokeswoman Jane Robison said authorities had received at least three reports of attacks by dogs belonging to Alex Donald Jackson, 29, since January.

"We believe there was evidence that he was aware the dogs were vicious and they have attacked before and he knew of the danger they posed," Robison said.

“District attorney spokeswoman Jane Robison said authorities had received at least three reports of attacks by dogs belonging to Alex Donald Jackson, 29, since January.”

If the dogs were loose & attacking, why was nothing done about it? Did the dog catcher get laid off due to sequestration?

Uh, retired “unarmed” officer. Geez, who would have ever thought that something like that could happen? Maybe that’s why Rick Perry carries when he’s out for a run. Of course we are talking the peoples republic(?) of kalifornia. Rainbows, unicorns, cotton candy puffy clouds in the sky.................. Basically utopia. NOT!

I posted pictures of the beast and its owner... or more accurately, the beast and its dog, but the mod removed them.

So what happened? Were the dogs roaming on their own? Did they break out? Did the owner let them out? Was the owner with them? Not enough details in this article! Who called the sheriff? In any case, poor lady... going for a walk and being killed...

I was referring to the 3 attacks (since January) prior to this one. I can only go from the way they handle it in my area, but if a band of pit bulls attacked once the dog catcher wd be on the case. Twice & the problem wd be solved. Three times—wouldn’t happen, at least not around here.

These dogs attacked 4 times according to the article. The fourth attack was fatal. Why wasn’t something done re: the preceding 3?

[I did read the article, bwt.]

The only thing I can think of was that possibly the first 3 attacks were not reported. Seems very shifty to me, but perhaps the incidents only came to light after the mauling death. I.e.: people stepped forward & described attacks after the fact.

If that’s what happened, it certainly undermines the murder charge. If the attacks weren’t such as to warrant a complaint at the time, how can the reports be confirmed & verified past tense?

If, however, they *were* reported, then you summed it up v well: someone was asleep at the switch.

My wife and I do not go for a walk without large walking sticks that can be used to fend off whatever. A good knife is always at hand as well. Gun would have been the order of the day for this one.

Several times while jogging I’ve been assaulted by dogs. If the owner saw they often said, derisively, “Oh, he’s going to hurt you!” These people either don’t understand dogs at all or they’re idiots, or, perhaps, they enjoy being aggressive by proxy. But dogs in general and pit bulls in particular can be dangerous even to family members. The problem with pit bulls is you never know when they’re going to morph into a killer.

Believe me, this article is making me think long & hard. I was riding my bike not a wk ago, & an intensely threatening pit bull came out into the street to challenge me. I had no weapon whatsoever. After giving the animal long enough to scare me witless, the owner called it in.

Now I should mention, I am a pit bull lover. I do not see them as bad to the bone, but rather as a product of their environment. If, however, that environment is such as to bring the aggression out in them, they are a huge problem, no doubt about it.

I hadn’t really considered the need to carry a weapon when bike riding on (peaceful) residential streets in broad daylight. Now I may have to rethink my strategy.

This line pissed me off:

Cleary said fatal dog attacks tend to occur in outlying locations much like Littlerock, a desert community of about 1,400 where chain-link fences surround scattered homes and signs caution trespassers and warn that dogs are present.

"It happens on the fringes of society — where people live to avoid others," he said.

So now rural areas are "the fringes of society"? Many people actually live out in the country for a variety of reasons, among them being they were born there, and have no desire to move to a suburb or city.

I guess Cleary subscribes to the bitter clingers theory....

Are you mad at me for inquiring? I read the article that was originally posted and there was nothing about who was there during the attack... how the dogs happened to be there... and certainly nothing about her being dragged 50 yards and her arm being yanked off... which, by the way, have nothing to do with my questions... i asked nothing regarding her injuries... understand?
