Notre Dame QB Golson Allegedly Kicked Out For Academic Violation

Everett Golson, whose heroics under center last season led the Fighting Irish to the BCS Championship game, is no longer enrolled at Notre Dame due to academic violations, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The news broke late Saturday night, with sources telling the Tribune Golson had committed a Residence Life violation before clarifying to reporter Brian Hamilton that an academic violation was the reason for Golson's departure from Notre Dame.

That's an important distinction, because as NCAA bylaws expert John Infante points out, an academic violation would render Golson ineligible to receive scholarship funding from any college in the upcoming year.

Golson started 12 of Notre Dame's 13 games last season, and was the core of coach Brian Kelly's offensive scheme. Senior signal-caller Tommy Rees is expected to take Golson's spot under center; Rees has considerable experience for the Irish, but is a clear second option for Kelly's offense. Rees was also jailed last year for allegedly assaulting a cop.

Sounds like maybe cheating on finals. Also sounds like this kid is screwed.

Obummer will give him free tuition at any university-

Is this the Notre Dame that used to be a Catholic University?

The kid cannot accept a scholarship, but he can probably walk into Auburn or any southern university, and get himself a starting position. I’d go and pay my own way....and help some team win a NCAA championship, and go off a year later to the NFL.

Plagiarism on an exam.

Ole Miss insiders say that he is going to land at Ole Miss.

I’ve heard that as well. He’s going to have to sit for a season though.

I’d agree, but here’s the deal - when I was an undergrad at a D-1 major conference school, I had a partial athletic scholarship (really minor sport). Anyway, to make up the difference I worked in the athletic department, specifically in the football program. If this kid was cheating on tests, or more likely having someone else write papers for him, someone in the athletic department knew about it, and that is a very serious NCAA violation.

Who’s going to pay? NCAA won’t allow some “benefactor” to come along and pony up for the kid. And if he’s already been kicked out of school for an academic violation, nobody will touch him. And speaking of academic violations, that’s generally not a zero tolerance issue - he’s probably been in trouble in the past and just kept trying to cheat.

He can walk on and play if he pays his own way, right? Or does he have to sit a year?

I am sure there are plenty of schools that would come up with “financial aid based on need”, as in “we need a QB.”

I don’t think he’d have to sit, but when a kid with no visible means of support shows up with cash, red flags go up.

“What did he do? Show up for class?”

Got caught cheating in the “Intro to Sandbox Management” final.

"Allegedly kicked out"?

Well, was he or wasn't he kicked out, does anyone know? Or should the headline read "Notre Dame QB Golson Kicked out for Alleged Academic Violation"?

If he transfers from Notre dame he has redshirt a year to play at the Division 1. He can still play at Division 2/3 or NAIA and be immediately eligible.

If he already used his redshirt year, he's essentially done at the Division 1 level.

Golson was redshirted during 2011.
