Here’s a big clue. All the 727’s were eliminated from the fleets of all the US airlines within weeks of 9/11/2001. The only passenger airliners in the US that have more than 2 engines nowadays are 747-400’s operated by United and Delta (former Northwest Airlines aircraft).
727s were retired from pax service due to noise issues, as hush kits weren’t cost effective for the airlines, but fed ex and UPS did hush kits and Rolls Royce Tay conversions for some time. Still one over the best single aisle air raft of all time, and still in use flying cargo and as private jets.
The retirements were greatly accelerated after 9/11. It wasn’t just the noise. The 727 gulps a lot of fuel, and it has 3 engines and a 3 man cockpit crew. The Airbus A320’s and Boeing 737-800’s that replaced 727’s have much better fuel economy and they have just 2 engines and a 2 man cockpit. When demand for airline travel dropped after 9/11, the airlines grounded their most inefficient aircraft.
