YOU were one of ‘them’...crossing guard/hall monitor etc.
And you are right ...DON’t even think of saying something..If ‘they’ thought you were thinking ‘bad thoughts’ you got whacked also (course in the 50’s whacked was a form of ‘love tap’ to get your attention).
Worse one I ‘ever’ got was Sister Mary..... went up alongside my head, made the mistake of mentioning it at home AND we all know (SISTER is NEVER WRONG) so got it again and next day at school was greeted with “We mustn’t carry tales home from school” so , I got it again.

I see you got my point. But I think you misapprehend Sister Mary Edwards. She recognized a shy, lonely, short boy, from one of the poorest families in a poor parish, and did him a favor he will never forget.
