Vanity Alert!
During WWII my dad worked on proximity fuses with James Van Allen at the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) of Johns Hopkins University. My mom said that he came over for dinner sometimes.
This was a few years before I cam along, so I never met him.
They built the proximity fuse, a vacuum tube radar set that fit in the nose of a anti-aircraft artillery shell. It withstood 50,000 G acceleration when fired. Growing up I had a non-explosive one I played with in the sandbox. I wish I still had it. Quite a museum piece!
