1896?! Heck, it goes back to the 5th century BC!
The 25 sports are: athletics, rowing, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football, gymnastics, weightlifting, handball, hockey, judo, swimming, modern pentathlon, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, shooting, archery, triathlon, sailing and volleyball.
But, gymnastic dancing is a sport?
No, but ping pong and canoeing supposedly are!
Cut Olympic wrestling but keep horse dancing/dressage. F the IOC!
But Badminton, dancing, ping-pong (uh “table tennis”) and the abomination called “rhythmic gymnastics” are “sports.”
What about pocket billiards?
Wrestling is a queer activity.
“No, but ping pong and canoeing supposedly are!”
I’m going to take a wild guess and say wrestling was cut because it’s just too aggressive for liberal sensibilities.
table tennis? They kept ping-pong as an olympic sport but phased out wrestling?
“Wrestling is a queer activity.”
Then you must have spent years and years wrestling?
Give me a break.
Combine shooting and archery with dressage.
Call it the Cavalry.
I'm in the latter group.
“Wrestling is a queer activity.”
So do you have homosexual thoughts often when watching wrestling?
Last Olympics I watched, I didn’t think there was any other sport except beach volleyball. That’s all I ever saw when I turned it on.
Call it the Cavalry.
Post of the day!
You’d think, given the leftist weenies that govern the IOC, that they’d love to keep a sport featuring sweaty men rolling around on the floor with each other.
Some people are so stupid it’s amazing that they remember to breathe.
I’m in the latter group. You’ve shown yourself to be in the former.
Tough to have high TV ratings when its never on. If that’s one of the criteria half of the “sports” would be gone. Wrestling was one of the few remaining actual sports. Seems the IOC is trying to turn the Olympics into a more mainstram X Games. While its a niche sport for wrestlers and parents tradition should not be overlooked. Golf should never have gotten in and wrestling never eliminated. And I loves me some golf, just don’t think its worthy of a Gold Medal.
One year this one wins, the next year another one wins etc etc...
Every sport is doping. Every judge is subject to bribes.
My all time favorite will always be....The guy steps up and addresses the ball: "How do you do sir?" Then he clubs "sir" to death....again and again and again...and wins a lot of money if he clubs his "sir" better than the next guy.
Or Equestrienne Biathalon.
The sports should have something to do with historical daily or at least occasional living activities. (They should add some rodeo events and get rid of hoops and golf.)
A friend read an article yesterday that said they are considering adding skateboarding and wake-boadring. That will fit right in with synchronized swimming.
Cowboys and Indians.
Posse vs. Rustlers
Imbeciles. The IOC and The United Nations are two sides of the same bogus coin.
Seriously. Handball, field hockey, badminton, table tennis? By the way, table tennis people hate it when you call it ping pong.
Log rolling would be more entertaining.
Bring back synchronized swimming...that was a real pants wetter to watch...almost as exciting as curling.
This is what the IOC shoud replace wrestling with:
Nope, too much testosterone involved. We need more synchronized swimming, dressage, and ribbon dancing.
too bad. outside of gymnastics, that was the only sport left in the olympics of interest to me (being a participant in my youth). oh well, socialism, doesn’t play well with the individual sport of wrestling.
Isn’t this THE original Olympic sport??
Only pussy sportie stuff will be allowed.
and taekwondo isn’t??
Interesting stuff. Very “real world”
Another IOC sucks moment! Wrestling to be replaced by some baton twirling gay game? Something the Chinese can compete in without turning their female athletes into men maybe?
Shall I continue?
It took 34 replies to have someone mention my favorite "sport" of curling. < /sarc>
Wrestling is just too violent of a sport. These violent activities must end. Don’t you know.
Do they ever play on grass or clay?
A necessary venue for passing out free condoms?
The 6 people who still follow modern pentathlon must have bribed the IOC some major $$$. Jim Thorpe won Gold in MP in 1912 and no one has cared since
Grass ping pong table?
The Olympics was so much that was good. It was a search for excellence in the human activities, the search for honor, and a search for competition for its own sake.
If you walk next to the original Olympic Stadium which still stands, you see a row of statues, names still visible carved into the bases, not to the victors to memorialize the greatness of their accomplishments, but rather to the cheaters, to record forever the shame of their cheating. The shame was eternal.
The winners received laurels which were wreaths around their heads to wear on the way home and thus show the honors of their victories. The gift was of fleeting moment, but the highest personal honor.
Now, we honor the winners with modern day statues in the forms of gifts of money and contracts, to try to give them everlasting fame, and we fleetingly shame the cheaters by giving them a temporary thistle of shame, which withers, dies and blows away, never to be remembered.
The Olympics were to compete in a field of honor, and politics were set aside, so as to allow safe passage through enemy territory for the purpose of the competition and for safe return.
Now, the politics guide the Olympics, wars are not suspended for their ceremony, and it is nothing more than a commercial enterprise on an international scale.
I am sad that wrestling has ended, but I am more sad that the Olympic Spirit died long ago, anyway.
As go the Olympics, so goes civilization, one a mirror of the other.
It’s a totally different game. ;-)
