Mrs Hazeldine said: ‘What I witnessed on the wards I will take to my grave and it spurs me on to make sure it never happens again to anyone else.’

Nurses acted as if he wasn’t worth saving Peter Burnhill, 84, died on March 11, 2007, a week after being admitted with breathing problems. The former typographer, who had leukaemia, was left for six hours on a trolley in accident and emergency.

He discharged himself after being left with no food and suffering grazed shins, allegedly due to rough treatment by nurses.

His wife Sonia said: ‘Nurses acted as if he wasn’t worth saving. He came out of hospital visibly shaken and much weaker.’

I work for the VA and our hospital is very clean.

I have gone to Amish homes here and their way ,at least what I have seen of it appears the best to me.

When the old person becomes bedridden they place their bed in their dining room where each family member comes through all day and if that person needs something it is attended to.

Now I cannot say this is what they all do, but I have observed it more than once
