Joe Paterno's widow to appear on Katie Couric's talk show
LA Times ^ | 2-5-13 | Chuck Schilken

Joe Paterno's widow is to give her first interview since the Jerry Sandusky scandal and her husband's subsequent death, appearing on Katie Couric's daytime talk show in an episode scheduled to air Monday.

Sue Paterno, who was married to the legendary Penn State football coach for 50 years, is scheduled to talk with Couric in studio for the nationally syndicated show "Katie." The two have already gotten together at Paterno's home in State College, Pa.

Joe Paterno was head coach of the Nittany Lions for almost as long as he was married, from 1966 into 2011. He led the team to two national titles and 409 victories, which was a major-college record until 111 of those wins were voided by the NCAA as part of the fallout from the Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal.

Paterno was fired by the school in the days after the scandal broke in late 2011. He died from lung cancer in January 2012. His on-campus statue was removed last July, days after he and three other former school officials were accused by former FBI director Louis Freeh, who headed the school's investigation into the scandal, of covering up allegations against Sandusky.

Many Penn State faithful, including members of Paterno's family, feel that the former coach's role in the scandal has been overblown.

Sue Paterno's chat will be Couric's second big sports-related interview in recent weeks. Late last month, she talked with former Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o in his first comments since revealing that his supposed late girlfriend actually never existed.

Get ready for another few weeks of Penn State news - as early as this weekend. This interview - which was done a couple of weeks ago - will air on Monday. But things are pointing to us hearing from either Wick Sollers (family attorney) or Paul Kelly (Lettermen attorney) before then.

Time to start to set the record straight. If anyone can handle Katie, it will be Sue.

Too bad that the JoPa thing was dropped when he died. I just wonder how much his wife knew and didn’t say all those years. I have a feeling that she knew a whole bunch.

Who’s wife are you referring to? Joe Paterno’s or jerry sandusky’s? You can’t be stupid enough to ...well...

In what way do you think the record should be set straight?

If you took a poll in this country, I bet half the citizenry would tell you that Joe Paterno was a child rapist who is currently serving time in prison.

The media did an excellent job of trashing him. It's what they do best.

The blame should be put where it belongs - on the second mile, Central Mountain HS, and the various state and local agencies and their “professionals” who failed the state of PA for years.

To blame ANY of this on JVP is ridiculous. To blame it ALL on him is the biggest non-political media scam we’ll see in our lifetimes.

Thanks for the heads up. I will try to watch even though Katie irritates me.

Actually, both . . . now that you mention it. I just can't believe that JoPa never discussed with his wife what Sandusky was doing back in those locker rooms all those years. Would love to know what they knew. Just curious.

Paterno enabled child abuse by deciding not to report Sandusky to the authorities. I don’t understand how on earth anyone could believe he was blameless.

Nor do I understand the cult of personality that grew up around the guy.

You don’t understand anything about this case.

There was ONE incident known to Joe Paterno before 2011. ONE. It happened in 2001 (long after js retired), and he reported it to his boss - the AD and referred mike mcqueary to Schultz - the head of the campus police the next day.

ONE incident (that we still don’t know how was described to him).

Do you know something the rest of us don’t?

Explain to me how you are alerted of one incident - second hand - and sketchy descriptions of what happened - ONE incident....and you report it to your superior the next day and you are labled an “enabler” by the likes of you.

Explain that.

See? A cult of personality, like I said.

Not that it will matter to you. All hail “JoePa”, right?

Sandusky Blew And Paterno Knew.

But you can’t reason with sports fanatics. It’s like talking to a liberal.

I have completely avoided threads about JVP hoping that people would have some sense of justice. But now I will break my silence.

I urge people to investigate Paterno's relationship with Sandusky. Hint: they were not friends, and Joe did not raise any objection to Sandusky's firing. He didn't even defend him. Joe may have had some idea of what was going on, but he did not have first hand information.

Time to put yourselves in that situation and think about what you would really do. Do you take rumor and a lack of charges as your motivation, or do you focus on football and all the problems going on with student-athletes?

The JoePa that I know is old school. He wasn't sophisticated, and that includes football for the last 20 years of his career. But he deserved to go out on his own terms - as much as I disliked seeing PSU lose. Given his lack of sophistication I completely believe that if Joe had hard evidence, saw it with his own eyes evidence, he would have personally cut Sandusky's cock off.

I think JoePa was just wise enough to think the authorities would take care of the problem. The problem was, the authorities didn't - at multiple levels of government.

SF Chronicle and louis freeh are now your heroes? John Ziegler is the villain? Seems like you just want to read what you already believe.

All Penn Staters - and guys like Franco and JZ - want is the truth. That’s all. Just the truth.

If you think we already have it - with a trial yet to even schedule a prelim - then have at it, and believe what you want.

I have news for you though, freeh (even given his recent promotion at Pepper) is likely about to get sued into the next galaxy.

You know... Nothing for nothing.. But if someone alerted me to a retired coworker having buttseks (at work) with a child, I’d pretty much freak the f@ck out in response.

And 3 years later, when the pedophile was still hanging around my job site, I’d be all like “omg that freakin monster had buttseks with a little boy!! Why is he still walking the streets?”

But I guess I am different like that.
