Super Bowl halftime show may be cancelled for 2014
Wash times ^

No halftime show at Super Bowl 2014? That’s the word, according to planners who say the weather may prevent appearances at matchup XLVIII, set for New Jersey.

“It’s because of the cold weather,” said one involved with next year’s Super Bowl planning, in a New York Post report. “It’s not only the acts and the singers, but also the crews that have to put the stage together. … You just can’t assemble the stage and break it down fast enough in the cold.”

EXCELLENT - proves they don’t need to rearrange contemporary songs in order to perform. There have been some great half time military tributes too.

According to Wikipedia, the 2014 SuperBowl will be the first outdoor Superbowl in a cold weather city since

the 1967 NFL Championship (The Ice Bowl).

Football games have been played in snowstorms since the game was invented. Why should the Super Bowl or meaningless bowl games be the exception.

I’ve been saying that for years. Bring back college bands that have competed for the honor. The self promo of the entertaining whoredogs is “tune out” for me. Let them play their Hollywood crap on muscle beach.

“Why not just go to Green Bay and be done with it?”

Isn’t that how championship games were played pre-Super Bowl? I would be all in favor of the big game being played on the home field of one of the finalist teams. At least one of the teams’ year-round fans could actually see their guys play in the championship game instead of its being restricted to those who can afford the travel and inflated SB tickets.

Actually, as I wrote that, I came to think the whole SB ‘thing,’ if reduced to one word, would be “inflated.”

Well, then it could get rather interesting.

Why should the Super Bowl or meaningless bowl games be the exception.

Because as far as the Super Bowl is concerned, the football game itself has become an afterthought. It's all about the parties, the "entertainment" at halftime, the ads, the sponsors, etc., and hey, if it should happen to be a decent football game, well, that's icing on the cake.

You know what would be a great half time show and it would be incredible. Roger Waters doing three songs from the Wall with fire works and First song would be In the Flesh with the Stuka dive Bomber coming out and crashing into a small wall, then Another Brick in the Wall with the large School master and kids singing, and to finish it off Confortably Numb. It would be one of the best half time Show since the Rolling Stones.

I'd rather see a couple of good college bands out on the field than the garbage they've been pushing the last few years.

Wow, I'm thinking you are channeling my late father. He hated these shows and always thought it was better to just have some good marching bands.

It occurred to me, once, that they should have the two top college marching bands duel it out at halftime and have people vote, ala American Idol, on which they liked best.

I read the Wiki page on The Ice Bowl, my God, what a game. I read it out loud to my hubby and we were laughing at a lot of the article. I don't think they would ever have these guys play in such conditions any more.

Yes, but before the Super Bowl the season, including the championship, would be over before the New Year. In 1973 the Super Bowl was played on January 14th.

No prancing faggots and jiggity sluts? Thank you! The last half-time show I watched for more than about 10 seconds was probably “Up With People” in January of 1980.

Half-time is for tossing the old pigskin around in the street anyway.

BuckeyTexan: Sorry, FRiend. Both of those girls can “sang.” They have spectacular pipes.

I think there's a generational difference between us here. As for the women yesterday, BuckeyeyeTexan, that caterwauling and vocal gymnastics sure isn't music to my ears. It just sounds like atonal screeching to me at the age of 70. Younger people have probably become accustomed to that kind of noise. And what I like (Vaughn Monroe, Tex Beneke and Patti Page) would probably be unappealing to the Alicia Keys crowd.

Likewise, crazydad, I never was able to latch onto the music of the beatniks and hippies -- Elvis was tolerable since he did some gospel songs such as Peace in the Valley. As for the Rolling Stones, I found their lyrics to be off-putting and not at all Christian. Sorry, but I've never even heard of Roger Waters.

So, give me Hank, Charlie and Lee for good, down-to-earth, wholesome, melodic entertainment. Although it would never happen in these politically-correct times, Bill Gaither or any Southern Gospel musician would be a surefire hit with me at the Super Bowl -- and probably, at best, 0.037% of the total population. :-)

FYI ......

NFL expected to invite Denver to bid for Super Bowl

Appears the NFL thinking has changed. Are the contrived venues like New Orleans getting stale?

In NYC you do your partying indoors. there are over 5,000 licensed premises in the city. 500 just in the E Village area. Football began in N Jersey over 150 years ago. It was a Fall and winter sport. Until the “Super Bowls”, the championships were played in open stadiums and primarily in Northern climes. Indoor football is a disgrace to the game.

Not as much of a difference as you might think. My taste in music is very, very broad. I love the artists you mentioned.

I also saw Pink Floyd twice in concert. (Sadly, not with Waters though.) They have always been my favorite. Floyd would be an incredible halftime show! Better than the Stones.

I didn’t mean to imply that either girl put on a good halftime performance. But they can sing.

Marching bands? Excellent....but if you want a SHOW....try having the DCI (Drum Corps International) Champions do the halftime. These young people know how to put on a show!

I’d much rather have seen the Blue Devils or the Phantom Regiment compared to what I saw yesterday.

(If you have no idea what I’m talking about, do a search.)
