Grandpa Snucked Out

February 27, 2013

My cousin Ken fought a courageous 4-year battle with cancer. In his final days, his wife, three children, and several grandchildren were in and out of his room, spending time with him and sharing special goodbyes. When everyone was out of the room for a moment, he slipped into eternity. After the family realized that he was gone, one young granddaughter sweetly remarked, “Grandpa snucked out.” One moment the Lord was with Ken here on earth; the next moment Ken’s spirit was with the Lord in heaven.

Psalm 16 was a favorite psalm of Ken’s that he had requested to be read at his memorial service. He agreed with the psalmist David who said that there was no treasure more valuable than a personal relationship with God (vv.2,5). With the Lord as his refuge, David also knew that the grave does not rob believers of life. He said, “You will not leave my soul in Sheol [the grave]” (v.10). Neither Ken nor anyone else who knows Jesus as Savior will be abandoned in death.

Because of Jesus’ own death and resurrection, we too will rise one day (Acts 2:25-28; 1 Cor. 15:20-22). And we will find that “at [God’s] right hand are pleasures forevermore” (Ps. 16:11).

“In the Beloved” accepted am I,
Risen, ascended, and seated on high;
Saved from all sin through His infinite grace,
I am accorded in heaven a place.
—Civilla Martin. © Renewal 1958. Hope Publishing.
God is our treasure now, and being with Him in heaven will bring pleasures forever.

Read: Psalm 16

My heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; my flesh also will rest in hope. —Psalm 16:9

I love those times, too. Only wish I had more of them.
Spring is on its way a little birdie told me. I love
that little birdie. No kidding, it won't be too long
and boy, will that make this gal happy!

Sorry for the absence, been down as bad as FR was. We are looking for a new single story smaller home, think I’ve found it, but we are checking out a few more in the area...all out side this crime ridden, high taxes cesspool called Memphis.

I’ve lived in Tennessee all my life except for living in Roanoke and Radford Virginia for several years, but have never been to Memphis (even though Elvis lived there.) Elvis did come to Bristol for a couple of concerts the year before he died. He stayed in a hotel in Bristol but his concert was at Freedom Hall in Johnson City, which is about a 30 minute drive from here. We went to both concerts and loved them. He was in his real fat stage then, but I loved him anyway. I was a huge Elvis fan and have a big collection of memorabilia of and about him. He had a voice like no other and was so good looking in his younger days.

Another recent piece I’d like to share. Not quite as dark as the last one, at least. :P

Mulligan - ©2013 by Trevor Patrick

What would you do if you were given a Mulligan:
To wake up one morning to find it’s twenty years ago?
What would you do with this second chance?
Would you make the same mistakes despite what you already know?

Would you waste it on vanity?
Or would you try to get rich?
Would you make sure all your fondest lifelong plans,
All went off without a hitch?

Would you do wrong unto others,
Before they can do wrong unto you?
Would you change the fates of your family and friends,
With all the things that you knew?

Would you learn from your failures?
Would you cherish your mistakes?
Would you try to stop wars and tragedies from taking place?

Or would you just sit back and watch the world fall,
And amuse yourself with the absurdity of it all?
Or would you try to be proactive and start wars of your own?
Would you reap all the benefits for you alone?

What would you do for a Mulligan?
What would you sacrifice?
If your first shot at life really was a read-through,
Would it be worth any price?

What would you give for a Mulligan?
Would you call up Old Lucy to sell your soul?
To have twenty years where you truly called the shots,
And your fate was firmly in control?

How many dream of a MacGuffin,
In this cruel, merciless world, where few ever attain their goals?

Oh how beautiful! Yes, thats spring in a nutshell!! I love spring when there’s a different feel and smell in the air. Its just a happy beautiful time. Not too warm and not too cold....just right! One thing we know, its on its way to us! Thats when I love to take my coffee out on the patio and just enjoy the sounds of little birds chirping so happy and busy as bees! I get anxious just talking about it. Its not warm enough yet to sit out.

Its been a grey day today and awfully cold. I had to run a couple of errands and didn’t know how cold it really was. The wind was cuttingly cold. Brrrr~~~~! Always happy to get back home. And I feel a nap coming on fast! I just had a good lunch and that helps the sleepiness overwhelm me. Talk at ya later! (((HUGS)))

Pack Up Your Sorrows

February 28, 2013

During the turbulent years of the 1960s, popular music in America was a strange mixture of protest and patriotism. Some songs lashed out against war, greed, and injustice in society, while others affirmed duty to country and traditional values. But “Pack Up Your Sorrows,” written by Richard Farina and Pauline Baez Marden, seemed to fit all of the categories with its focus on the quest for personal peace. The refrain said the following:

Well, if somehow you could pack up your sorrows,
And give them all to me
You would lose them, I know how to use them,
Give them all to me.

Perhaps everyone hoped that someone really could bring them peace.

The good news is that there is Someone who can! Isaiah 53 is a prophetic picture of Israel’s promised Messiah. Christians see its fulfillment in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. “Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows . . . . He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed” (vv.4-5).

Jesus took our sins and sorrows on Himself so that we could be forgiven and have peace with God. Will you give Him your sorrows today?

Never a burden that He does not carry;
Never a sorrow that He does not share;
Whether the days may be sunny or dreary,
Jesus is always there.
—Bertha Lillenas. ©1934 Homer A. Rodeheaver.
No sorrow is too heavy for our Savior to bear.
