Mother Nature is an evil bitch that wants us dead. We know this, we accept it, we try to burn one plant a day as petty revenge against her for it and we move on with our lives. But sometimes her traps are so unsubtle, so obviously, blatantly designed to do nothing but murder human beings in the most awful ways possible that we can't help but stand and applaud her sheer balls. In that spirit, here are five of Mother Nature's more vicious bear traps:

I’ve been all over I tell you. I’ve been to London, Paris and Havana and never left the state of Arkansas. I have relatives that live near Houston which ain’t too far from Toadsuck. I drove my wife crazy at Big Flat. “Look there’s a Big Flat dog”. “Over there’s a Big Flat house”. Arkansas has some crazy names for some towns.

“Sometimes the formations produce Yes album covers just to mess with you.”

Kudos to Roger Dean. Some of the best album artwork of the 20th century.

I would highly recommend a visit to Anchorage and Seward about the first or second week of July. It is staggeringly beautiful, the temperature is typically moderate, around 70F, everything is green and lush (Anchorage hosts a summer ‘flower theme’ for gardens), and there are wild animals all over the place.

Or, as someone said, “We have pigeons. They have bald and golden eagles.”

An oddity is that it is daytime about 20 hours a day, and you feel so full of energy you want to walk everywhere, and are never sleepy. At 10:30pm your brain will tell you that it is 4pm.

Anchorage is pristine, clean, and a highly entertaining place as well, as the people in summer are as active as the animals and plants, to take advantage of the season. Prices are about par with the rest of the US, except for a lack of “convenience” items, like fast food. And, ironically, seafood is a bit more expensive.

It is a semi-heaven for fishermen, semi- because the water can be like glass one minute, and turn into 8 or 10 foot swells the next. But your reward might be a salmon the size of your leg, or a 150 pound flounder.

But yes, stay off the glacial silt.
