Michigan fisherman hooks 3-pound, 15-inch long goldfish
Mike Martin caught the large goldfish while ice fishing at Lake St. Clair in Michigan. He says he plans to eventually mount the catch, which has become an international sensation.
Mike Martin, 25, set out onto the icy surface of Lake St. Clair, a freshwater lake between Michigan and Ontario, on Jan. 11. The temperature was beginning to rise and there was a feeling in the air that it might be his last ice fishing opportunity for a while.
He cut a circle in the ice and dropped his line into the familiar chilly waters as he had countless times before. He felt the line get tighter. He had a bite.
Martin had been fishing in this area since he was 5, but when he reeled this particular fish up, he discovered that he had just caught something he never anticipated: a 3-pound, 15-inch goldfish.
It was kind of a shock, he told the Daily News. I pulled it up and just kind of stared at it for a minute. I really didnt know what to do with it.
Most people have only seen tiny goldfish in clear bowls or plastic bags at carnivals. Few have seen one in the wild and even fewer have seen such a large goldfish anywhere.
They keep growing and growing, Martin said. They get bigger and bigger and they eat everything in their path Basically, its an invasive species simple as that. Goldfish have been known to decimate any ecosystem theyve been in.
Martin brought the carp home and placed it in his freezer. He plans to mount it eventually, especially now that the catch has made the news.

OMG, you could have gone all day without that!
I could go all day without doing most of the stuff I do, but.....
I’ll bet you a fin that somebody out there rated that pun up the scale, at least better than the tail end. Really.
I wouldn’t hand you a line.
I think you misunderstood me. I was complimenting you on a good pun. That’s a standard way of wording such a compliment.
I know - (sheesh!)
I was pretending offense so I could have an excuse to type out a couple more.
Guess I hooked you with that one, eh?
He’s a sucker for your puns.
Oh my goodness that’s Flippy I flushed him down the toilet years ago.
More than likely someones bait that got off the hook and survived for awhile used to be most bait fish bought were a type of carp they were many different colors including gold..
I wanted to add I dumped some of our bait fish that we had left over into a Pond that had never had any fish last time I checked there were 100s of the things some of them had grown to 10 or 12 lbs.
I know some black dudes who can show you how to can it. Then you pat it out like salmon patties and cook it I tried some and could not tell the difference!
I remember a time when everyone ate what they caught carp was just another fish people even ate suckers lol. I think next time we are fishing I will write down the process it would be good knowledge to have in these times.
Yep, I guess so. You are a clever fellow, in a very offensive way.
I think I’ll be going now. A little bit of you goes a long way.
Goldfish are strange... they grow in proportion to the size of their tank...
