I also saw the new Ruger .45 compact today. I’d like to see some reviews on it.

The FBI went from .38 and 9mm to 10mm and .45 and .40 because of that little fiasco they had a few years back. Some still carry 9mm. But they are idiots.

Masaad Ayoob had a good write up about the infamous Miami shootout where several feds were killed.

He read up on the autopsy reports and concluded that the 9mms had performed about as well as they could. He said those guys were using Ruger mini 14s. He also said they fought on for a minute of two after they were basically dead.

Among wounds, I still remember that one 9mm bullet tore the entire aorta off the heart plus several other non survivable injuries. It was just that these guys were tough and didn’t drop when they were fatally shot.

Basically the 9mm performed just as it should have. Changing to a hotter caliber woud not have helped unless you are maybe talking about a .44 mag or .41 mag.

Oddly enough, it was a 38 that actually ended that fight, when it nicked the BG’s spine. The fatal wound came earlier, when a 9mm nicked an artery.

In the end, stopping power comes from hitting something vital. A bigger caliber that penetrates the same distance will increase the odds of hitting something vital, although not as much as TWO holes from a slightly smaller caliber. Two 9mm holes penetrating 14 inches will have a better chance of hitting something vital than 1 45 round penetrating 14 inches.

In the end, shooting the biggest gun you can shoot well seems to be good advice. And CARRYING a gun means carrying the biggest gun you can conceal properly - which can be a challenge in southern Arizona in summer.

I don’t know..but I can pretty much guarantee they weren’t hollow point. I was so pissed off when I heard that as my hubby bought me a 38 revolver for Christmas. (pink grips!).

Do those grips help a weak and tender arthritic hand, do you think?

Actualy the 9mm and 38 special shoot the same caliber round. the .38 just has alot more powder (velocity) behind it. Same with the 357 mag. More powder than the .38 but same caliber round.

That's a huge misconception. The 9mm was developed in the era of smokeless powder and as such it fires at a much higher pressure than does the .38 Special, which was developed from a black powder cartridge round.

The .38 Special cartridge generates 17,000 psi. The typical 9mm puts out 35,000 psi. A 9mm+p generates 38,500. A 357 Magnum also generates 35,000, but by not being dependent upon its bullet shape or weight range to feed the next round without jamming, has developed a better reputation as a man stopper since it can throw a wider variety of projectiles down range. Also, the .357 Mag, with its long case and revolvers all developed in the era of smokeless powder, can be loaded "hotter" with slower burning powders that generate more speed for the projectile than the fast burning powders used in the relatively short 9mm case can achieve.

The real hierarchy is .38 Special>>>>>>9mm>>9mm+p>>9mm+p+>>>.357 Magnum.
