Baseball's emphasis on statistical analysis has led to the loss of jobs among scouts. The gala in Century City will feature Vin Scully, Don Mattingly, Tom Lasorda and other baseball greats.

Do you need a scout to go to each game? Probably not, but each team better have a subscription to get video of each game and pay someone to watch them. The box score doesn't tell enough by itself. You're spending tens of millions of dollars on player salaries, so don't try to shave a few tens of thousands of dollars on support staff.

Yes. I thought of that as soon as I saw the article.
I read the book and saw the movie. While I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, I got much more value from the book.
People who have not read the book and wish to do so should get the 2011 paperback edition. It has a new chapter in the back of the book which deals with the reaction baseball people had to the book after its initial release.
