if you are limited to 10 rounds; jeesh!

In this day and age, a regular old 1911 just might not be sufficient.

First of all, in a home invasion, I wouldn’t use a carbine anyway. I’d prefer a 12 ga. pump shotgun or a large-caliber wheelgun.

Might have to use my AR-15 Assault Rock like the one that’s currently for auction on Ebay!

A 12Ga. pump would be my weapon of choice.
I only need to take down one or two; it’s doubtful if the rest would stick around.

That’s why I keep an exra mag in alongside the 1911 at night, with the LED flashlight.

That’s a total of 16 X .45 ACP. Should be adequate.

At that point, if 16 rounds is not enough, something is VERY wrong — I am in a gun fight, not a self-defense scenario.

Even an 870 doesn’t have that many rounds ;-)

Rifle for home defense? Not so much, unless you spot the perps at the edge of the driveway.

Open-choke shotgun for close quarters. Thing to remember: a shotgun still needs to be pointed at your target. One blast will NOT take down people in a 180-degree arc.

Pump-action shotguns usually pack 5 or 6 shells. One per perp.

A cartridge only holds one bullet. Are you mixing up the term with magazine?

Something to consider is the time of day. I’ve been tracking home invasions that have happened locally and most happen in the early evening; between 7:00 and 11:00 with two perps. Hoodlums looking for money for their nightly buzz I think. Be interested in what others have observed in their locales. I’m in a suburban area. Might be different in a rural area.

Where are you going to be at that time of day? How far is it to your gun? Is a round chambered? To be effective, your defense weapons need to be in reach and ready to go boom without making any noise.

Given opportunity, my plan is to take a stealth defensive position and lay in wait so I get the first, and hopefully last shots off.

Well, let’s see, I can take out the first three with my Henry Big Boy, have one round left, then pick up my Henry Golden Boy, which the 4th perp can’t tell from my Big Boy, and he runs, or if not I start pumping 16 .22 long rifle cartridges at him.

No matter how many perps, when the shooting stops I still want to have one full magazine in reserve. Preferable a 30 rounder.

My Mosin-Nagant 1891/30 rifle only has a 5 round integral, single stack magazine, but it has a bayonet longer than my leg.

It also makes a nice war club

"how many rounds do you want in your cartridge"

12 ga., double-ought buckshot.: 9 rounds in the cartridge (load), and a few more of those. ;-)

Rifles are kinda limiting for self-defense, unless someone in the middle of nowhere is attacked by snipers. Even then, expensive optics/lighting, good protective cover and quite a few other considerations would probably be more important than sprayer capacity. A good, retained lawyer, BTW, is one of the most wisely recommended pieces of self-defense equipment.

I remember a boxing match at a karate school. The students were very kicking-oriented, so when they had to box, and had gloves strapped on, they focused on boxing and their gloves, though kicking was permitted. They did not do well because their training was for kicking, not boxing. Finally a senior student totally ignored the gloves and kicked seven bells out of his opponent.

I relate this because, like boxing gloves on a kicker, if you have a gun, the tendency is to focus on the gun, not the far more important “mission” of what you are doing with the gun, of which the gun might be just a small part.

So when you pick up a gun, pick up another weapon as well. And a cellphone as well, if one is handy.

Imagine the surprise when you cap a drugged up armed robber a few times, and he still has a chutzpah to charge you, only to get a really good *smack* in the center of his forehead with a claw hammer? Southpaw, no less. It still works.

Question for Freepers:

For home defense and whatever else happens down the line, I am considering two 12ga shotguns.

Remington Versa Max Tactical

Beretta TX4 Storm

Advice? Critiques? Suggestions?

Multiple firearms constitute defense in depth. I used to like my Mossberg 500 for the task but Santa brought me a 930. With 2 3/4" shells I get a bonus shell in the magazine! Ghost ring sight. Rack 'em.

Backup is whatever pistol I have at hand and I always do have at least one. Or grab the other Mossy. Or the tomahawk. Nothing says "Welcome to Chez Drill, Mr. Criminal!" like a tomahawk between the eyes.
