We won! Though we were widely considered underdogs to the Russian and Canadian teams, the USA squad made it to the finals of the World Junior Championships in Russia and triumphed over Sweden, 3-1, to take the gold medal. Not only was it hockeyhockey still existsit was a great American triumph, as Florida Panthers draft pick Rocco Grimaldi scored the tying and go-ahead goals after a less-than-promising start to the game.
As Desi_Relaford noted in the game thread: "Nothing is more American than winning a gold medal in a sport that barely registers in the US in a tournament most American don't know about against a team who has been on the front page of their country's newspapers for the past 3 weeks. USA! USA!"
Let's celebrate with the USA team's rendition of its own anthem: "OhOhoHH SaaYEEE CAN YoUoUoU SeEeEeE..." You can hear voices cracking. It's beautiful, it's own way. And even if it's a bit off-key, it's not the worst we've heard.

If this doesn't bring a smile to your face, or a tear to your eye, nothing will!
It was a great effort especially by coach Phil Housley bringing the boys back from two preliminary round losses like he did.
Team USA is growing defensemen again, like we used to in the days of Chelios and Leetch, and that’s how you win, from the goal out.
I wish we could get the NHLers OUT of the Olympics and make that event a rung on the ladder again.
Well, at least they know the words, which is more than you can say for Hillary Rotten Clinton.
Congratulations!
The final game was a great match - the team USA definitely on top during the 1st and 2d periods, though Sweden took the lead. However, team Three Crowns (Sweden) started to produce a bunch of good opportunities in the last period, and the game was finely balanced until USA scored 16 seconds before the end in an empty net.
Seen over the whole tournament team USA was the best team. All the Swedish experts commenting the final agreed on that. But we will do our best to regain the word title next time.
Looking forward to another great tournament in 2014.
:-)
WOOOOHOOOOO! HOORAY World Champion USA Junior Hockey Team! Gold!
Congrats USA Jr Hockey! World Champs!
I fully agree!
If I were a basketball fan, I'd say the same about keeping the NBA pros out of the olympics too.....but since I'm not, I couldn't care less.
Rocco Grimaldi, the player who scored twice, is a devout Christian. This article is from June:
Very cool story! Thanks for sharing it!
Please add me to the list!
Thanx!
You’re on! Welcome to the team!
