You are welcome. We do have Oklahoma gardeners, but right now I can’t remember much of anything.
I successfully grew lettuce in the summer here in Missouri, just to prove I could. LOL. I chose a heat tolerant variety and planted it where it got afternoon shade, and watered it every day.
Our biggest problem was we didn’t have enough water, so we made a choice to water the perennials, and the fruit and nut trees, and let most of the gardens die.
I had a small patch of 8 tomato plants that I protected with a sheet pulled on 4 corners like a tarp roof to give them shade. They grew lots of tomatoes, but the squirrels picked them all while green for the water I think.
In the fall after a few rains and cooler temps, I got a big crop, and a bunch of green ones that I brought in after a few frosts, that have ripened indoors, and I am still eating those.
We are going to choose short maturity this year, and plant them early to get a crop before the summer heat we hope. Also we got a swimming pool on sale for about 200 bucks that will hold 4000 gallons of water which we plan to catch from the roof during spring rains.
Gotta have water. It’s about the most important thing.
Welcome back. I post every Friday sometime between Noon and 1pm plus or minus a few minutes. Hope to hear more from you.
Western PA has had to dig out three times since the day after Christmas. Two more inches expected over New Year’s Eve and Jan 1st. My kohl plants are buried in snow.
What are some of the simplest, lowest maintenance crops one can plant, almost a plant it and forget it except for the occasional weeding or watering?
What Zone or area do you garden in?
It was a beautiful New Years day here in Benderville so I wandered out to feed the tweety birds and before I knew it I had pruned the Raspberry patch and tidied up a couple of things like some rearranging of the garden shed and even pushed the recycle bin out to the street for Wednesday pickup. We can’t put out the garbage bin until the morning because of Mama Bear and all the little Bears wandering around. Had a fine Prime Rib dinner here for most of our family today.
HAPPY and HEALTHY GARDENING TO ALL FOR 2013!!!
Well good for you. I admire your initiative. I spent the day recovering some of a sleep deficit, lurking and posting on FR wrapped in a blanket, and avoiding the ice outdoors because its slicker than slick and twice as lethal.
I expect I’ll be going to bed shortly to catch up some more on sleep. Energy is totally gone for now.Lol.
Happy and Healthy gardening right back at you and to all on FR Garden Thread.
what with the state of our country and our world, the garden offers a little respite.
It was probably a Chupacabra.
