I just got back from seeing Les Mis. I thought it was dull. The way the movie was filmed was strange. Endless closeups.

Tarantino gave an extended interview on PBS yesterday that I had to suffer through due to family in the room, it was intolerable to the point that I couldn’t bear to listen to his description of the plot of the movie, much less see it develop on screen in the theater on account of his smarm and ego. I’ve seen most of his films, and slowly realized the whole push of his movies is not to glorify the plot or the characters or the cinematography, but Tarantino himself.

Got back from Les Mis 10 min ago. At least 2 cute women in crowd (my wife and daughter) and 2 somewhat bored guys (son and self). Good movie, felt like 4 hours long. Jackman is awesome, Crowe a bit too sympathetic as Javert. Other singing is very good.

All in all, a good movie. But the actors pale beside Darren McGavin and Alastair Sim, both of whom we watched last night.

Just got back from Le Mis…Have seen the stage production several times and the music is often played in our house. This is a very good production and we all enjoyed it a lot (four of us). One negative that had me wondering for a minute… the computer animation with the shipyard at the very beginning is rather lame but fortunately it lasts for a short time and I’m sure others saw it and didn’t notice it. The story as a stage production actually flows reasonably well but the movie makes all the parts flow seamlessly. The themes of justice denied, pursuit by the law for nonsense reasons, kindness, forgiveness, redemption etc come through very well and it’s actually possible to have a tear well up from time to time. As a musical, I’m sure that folks will comment on the music not being as good as a stage production…. They’d be right but well, duh. In my opinion, it actually works better because the singers are not great. I mean, who would go to hear Russell Crowe sing? However, the reason I say it actually works better is because it makes the characters a bit more believable…these are after all supposed to be a bunch of ordinary people and thus while the actors better be able to act, the should not necessarily be able to sing as flawlessly as opera singers. Having said that, the singing was reasonably good and since virtually all the dialogue is in song, it’s important to distinctly understand every word. Another thing that made the music in my view be far more believable is that the singing was obviously recorded on the set as the acting actually happened…. As opposed to actors just doing their lines and then doing the singing in a studio with it all getting dubbed in later. Often in musicals the words can’t be clearly understood but such was not the case in Le Mis. Overall, I’d give it high marks and yes, Jackman is great in it.

As for The Hobbit, I saw it a few nights ago with some other family members. The others thought it was ok but I hated it….the bone crunching bass blasts were too frequent and way to loud and it goes on and on because of the many battle scenes. I mention this because I’m sure that the theatre I saw it in is not unique…. It’s the kind of movie where they really crank up the bass/volume and folks might want to consider taking earplugs with them as it was headache-inducing. I am sick and tired of make-belief movies where every fantastic danger is meant with an even more fantastic solution which is met by an more fantastic danger which is met be an even more fantastic solution……… and on and on it goes. I’m sure it was only a bit over 2 hours long but it felt like 5 and I couldn’t wait for it to end. Computer animations are a fact of life in movie making and thus here to stay….but I think that in this case, while expected to be plentiful, it actually detracted much from the movie and it would have been a far better movie if it had of had about 1/10 of the computer animations. I’d give it a miss.

I saw Les Miserables today. In a word, awesome. They sold so many tickets at my multiplex that they had open another theater and show it there simultaneously. Jackman and Hathaway deserve Oscars although Crowe was a little weak, in my opinion.

I have seen the play and several scenes, such as “Empty Chairs and Empty Tables,” come off much more powerfully on the screen than on stage.

Highly recommend.

We saw Argo today. Very well done. Great except for the carter VoiceOver at the very end.
