Rick Perry essentially tried this scheme in Texas and nearly lost his job over it - he had to back off to keep his job.
It’s depressing how many conservatives have NO PROBLEM AT ALL with Road Pricing, and don’t even care if there’s a huge number of cameras, transponders, and databases monitoring their driving - REAL TIME.
For my part, I don’t see how conservatives are OK with taxation to support roads, especially at the federal level. Like I said in another post here, federal highway schemes were the beginning of big government involvement in the transportation business, especially what with leftist jealousy of the success of railroads (all privately owned down to the infrastructure; they were taxed into near oblivion, and only came back with deregulation and de-taxation, but the passenger rail business is permanently damaged thanks to continued overregulation).
The government not only funded roads, but also airports; there has never been a 100% private international airport in this country.
