For my part, I don’t see how conservatives are OK with taxation to support roads, especially at the federal level. Like I said in another post here, federal highway schemes were the beginning of big government involvement in the transportation business, especially what with leftist jealousy of the success of railroads (all privately owned down to the infrastructure; they were taxed into near oblivion, and only came back with deregulation and de-taxation, but the passenger rail business is permanently damaged thanks to continued overregulation).
The government not only funded roads, but also airports; there has never been a 100% private international airport in this country.

I think what angers the Brits is that they already pay $5.00 per gallon in gas tax. I think they rightly feel that a small part of the money they pay could actually be used for the roads (i.e., 10 to 15% of that), and they are rightly suspicious that a plan to charge them even more to drive, and then charge them by where they drive, when they drive, what they drive, and maybe how much they earn, is simply a way to TOTALLY CONTROL their lives.
I happen to agree with that, although lots of conservatives would rather have their movements monitored, and controlled, as long as they’re told it’s being done privately (regardless if they have a hot-link to Interior Ministry).
