If you thought the Newtown, Connecticut shooting was one place where a refuge from racial politics could be found, you were deeply mistaken. At least one commentator on MSNBC is determined to bring the subject up.
In a conversation on MSNBC’s Up With Chris Hayes, Salon columnist David Sirota argued that the discussion surrounding the shooting in Newtown has been spared a larger degree of ugliness by the fact that the shooter in this case – Adam Lanza – was a white man. However, Sirota did not see this as a positive. Rather, he saw it as evidence that America is willing to leap to the easy out of racial profiling for every crime except for school shootings. Why? Because school shootings, according to Sirota, are perpetrated by white people.
To that end, Sirota made the following comment while responding to the idea that the mentally ill might be followed and surveyed by the government with the same zeal as the terrorist watch list.
“The issue with it will be, politically, I think; the profile is white men. That’s a profile that’s not, essentially, in America allowed to be profiled. That’s the one profile in America that’s not allowed to be profiled.”

You’re actually wrong about that. Given the proportion of the population, around 20 percent of murders are committed by black men, and about twice their share of the male population. That’s about four times their percentage of the overall population. While it is true that men and young men are more likely to kill others, it’s not true that white young men are more likely to do so.
This is simply the opposite of profiling. You’re placing erroneous scrutiny on people who do not, as a group, ‘fit the profile’.
If you look at the actual facts, there have been significant serial killers who were not white, and the highest kill count was owned by a hispanic man before the sprees of the 70s (with Gacy, Corll and Bundy) superceding. Look up Juan Corona.
If you look at the 17 serial killers with more than 15 people killed:
Gacy, Corll, Dominique, Bonin, Kearney, Dahmer, Kraft, and Hatcher were gay.
That’s the real story. Who really should be profiled are gay men.

Most of the killing by black males is “business related,” while these white kids have no monetary reason for killing and perhaps just want to be noticed.
Or it could be economic, these white mass shooters seem to all come from upper middle class families and likely never had to worry about their next meals or someone providing a roof over their head.
On the other hand, black urban kids likely have never had that stability and have bigger things to worry about and to time to think about such an act.
Soft suburban kids who emotionally collapse when the going gets tough.

Perhaps start with The Civil Rights Act. I can think of one demographic it doesn’t protect and the extreme difficulty in finding a lawyer who’d take any case of discrimination against a white male based on his race. The typical response by lawyers is to laugh out loud then cite the Civil Rights Act and Affirmative Action.

The first school shooting I remember happened less than a mile from my home at a mostly white school (then). A black man walked into a portable classroom and held a gun to the head of his girlfriend. I am pretty sure that the guy allowed the teacher to usher the other students out of the room. The guy then killed his girlfriend and himself. That teacher passed away this past year. My brother was a student at the school when this happened, and I was in junior high. I don’t remember if they replaced that portable or not, and if they didn’t, then I had American History in that room two years later. The next school shooting at that school occurred a year after I graduated. Some gang member decided to shoot someone in the parking lot. The demographics of that area went from white to black rapidly after that. These things occurred during the Reagan presidency.
Maybe he’s right.. How old were the murderers at WACO who fired incendiary tear gas into the complex killing 20 children?
I don’t know in that particular case, but government employs young men to do that kind of work.
I thought that profiling - e.g., in the absence of a specific crime to which a suspect with a specific ethnic make-up had been linked: law enforcement officials stopping, questioning, and perhaps searching the vehicles of Black motorists, simply on the basis of their race, in the belief/hope that they would be more likely to find any sort of incriminating evidence, i.e. "fishing" - had been deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.
Can someone help me out here? Just what sort of profiling does this idiot here claim is routinely allowed in the United States?
Is he talking about, e.g., subjecting bearded, Koran-toting airline passengers to stricter frisking, while permitting Scandinavian nuns to pass unaccosted? Because that, apparently, isn't the policy of TSA.

I love the quality of the graphics on the latest games.... but there is no effing way I will ever play a game centered around killing and maiming with guns or whatever other weapons... I find them sickening.
As for gun control... a lot more normal God fearing folk need to be carrying guns! There should be very few places where citizens can’t carry weapons. NO MORE GUN FREE KILLING ZONES!

In this school case, the father was at home until this man was 17, almost 18, so he had the father at home.
