If you thought the Newtown, Connecticut shooting was one place where a refuge from racial politics could be found, you were deeply mistaken. At least one commentator on MSNBC is determined to bring the subject up.
In a conversation on MSNBC’s Up With Chris Hayes, Salon columnist David Sirota argued that the discussion surrounding the shooting in Newtown has been spared a larger degree of ugliness by the fact that the shooter in this case – Adam Lanza – was a white man. However, Sirota did not see this as a positive. Rather, he saw it as evidence that America is willing to leap to the easy out of racial profiling for every crime except for school shootings. Why? Because school shootings, according to Sirota, are perpetrated by white people.
To that end, Sirota made the following comment while responding to the idea that the mentally ill might be followed and surveyed by the government with the same zeal as the terrorist watch list.
“The issue with it will be, politically, I think; the profile is white men. That’s a profile that’s not, essentially, in America allowed to be profiled. That’s the one profile in America that’s not allowed to be profiled.”

Unfortunately, statistically, he is correct on this point. Interesting, to say the least.
White, male, anarchist, college students still living with mommy and daddy would be a better target group. Just trying to help.

White they may be, but men they are not. These are feminized adolescents who have no conception of what being a man is all about.
If we are to adopt a policy of racial profiling of Mulims on airplanes or young Black males driving through white neighborhoods, we will have to profile young white males walking into a school, shopping mall or movie theater.

Just curious. Exactly how does one go about profiling a majority of the population? Doesn’t that sort of defeat the purpose of profiling?
The majority of our population is not made up of white males between the ages of 17 to 29, but the majority of our mass shooting are committed by that demographic.
Yeah, that always works. The DC snipers were profiled as a singular white male. Turned out to be two black muslims.
The guy has a point. When was the last time a crazy black or Hispanic shot up a place - the best they can do is be sniper-like, taking days between kills (i.e., Malvo and Atlanta). Lots of black people and lots of really bad black people have guns - but they STILL don’t run into their local schools and start shooting up the place.
Actually, I partially agree, although I would take the age down to maybe 12 or something, and then have an upper limit of maybe 35. Also, I’d only be profiling the ones on drugs or confirmed nerds (i.e., half of them). Those skinny young whites worry me as much as some black thug.
How many babies were aborted in America?
Guy did not refer to “white males between the ages of 17 and 29,” he referenced “white men.”
While not a majority, that’s a really large chunk of the population.
I wish people weren’t so utterly ignorant of what profiling is and how it is used and misused.
Richard Jewell, the hero of the Atlanta Olympics bombing, had his life ruined because he “fit the profile.” Which he did, along with a hundred thousand or so other people in GA. The idiot media extrapolated this to mean he was therefore guilty in some way. Which is NOT the purpose of profiling.
Also there was Colin Ferguson, who murdered six people on a Long Island train back in the 90s.
While the writer may not breakdown the demographic data or which subset of or population are committing these acts, we can.
And we as a nation must figure out what makes these young white males resort to such violence. The easy answer is that they are evil and crazy, but we need to dig deeper.
Young black males do retail violence, young white males go more for the wholesale variety?
They are young white males, shinny, very pale, empty eyes, smarter than average, pissed off at the world and likely on medication.
Anyman with a rifle with extra magazine should be profiled and questioned when he enters a school—Thats fine with me.
