For years, I had heard that Citizen Kane was the greatest film of all time, so I had high expectations when I entered the theater, bought some popcorn and took my seat. I left the theater quite disappointed--in my opinion, even the original Star Wars was better.
I bought the CK DVD and watched it for the first time with my 5 kids. They didn't make it 30 minutes. I finished it but would never watch it again.
Fun, absorbing, exciting, thrilling, romantic, colorful, big, and rousingly entertaining.
A splendid time is guaranteed for all.
That's why I stressed that Citizen Kane is a film (insert snooty accent here)
You marvel at the composition, the depth-of-field camera work, Orson Wells, Joseph Cotton, Agnes Moorehead...the cinematography of Gregg Toland, the script by Herman J. Mankiewicz, the editing of Robert Wise and an ending that was so perfect that it has become a cliché and been parodied more times than can be counted.
Certainly not everyone's cup of tea...but what art isn't?
