I’ve seen gardens like that do well, but only when they were hydro/aquaponic. Soil dries out too fast, as you’ve seen.
That lib George Lopez was doing an HBO comedy show in San Antonio, TX a few years ago and when on a rampage (not joking or funny by any means) about illegal pickers wiping their butts with veggies meant for gringos. The Texas board here was outraged. Since then he's been on my don't watch list but he did send the message home. Who knows what germs are on our store bought food.
They have those portable outhouses for the tomato pickers in Tennessee, but where so they wash their hands after doing their ‘business’?

greeneyes a little history about the thread. It was started by Freepers gardengirl and Gabz at the beginning of 2007. Sometime in the summer of 2007 the posting of the thread got very spotty missing weeks at a time. I FReep mailed gardengirl and Gabz and asked them If they would mind if I could take the thread and make sure that the thread was posted every week on a steady schedule. They both agreed. So I began posting the thread. It has been a reliable Friday thread ever since. Gardengirl dropped off the radar here at FR and has not been heard of since. Gabz is still posting. Last December 2011 I decided I needed to let someone else take over the thread because I was moving to Texas and did not know if I would be able to have a garden. JustaDumbBlonde volunteered to post the thread and now she also has gone off the radar in August of this year. Sad! But thanks to you greeneyes it continues thrive.
RitaOK does not understand the importance of threads like these to FReepers. I was trying to keep up with the ping list and the last time I updated mine there were 532 FReepers on it. Keep up the good work! If you ever need help just let me know.

You have been added. My tomatoes were totally worthless for most of the summer. I set up a sheet as a tent to protect them, and continued to water them just enough to survive.
This fall, they turned out tomatoes like gangbusters. After nursing them through a few quick freezes, I finally collected all the blush colored, followed by the green ones, and have been eating the red treasures daily.LOL.
I am planning to order some short DTM varieties next year to hopefully get a harvest before the heat and drought gets too bad. Then maybe start some indoors in late July or something for a fall/winter harvest.
Well, yeh, I’ve seen a lot of stuff that isn’t necessarily my cup of tea, but I just bypass it. Will keep you posted on the stevia.
Hope springs eternal. Glad to give encouragement. I guess you know you will have to pollinate the flowers yourself-no bees to do it in the winter usually, but that is easy too.
Thank you so much Red Devil. I really miss your posts. Maybe you’ll be able to get a little more gardening in this summer, if the brewing doesn’t take too much time. LOL
Have had three truck loads of chips delivered by the men clearing the tree lines for REMC. Two more and we’ll have some paths and work cut out for clear winter days. Wish I owned a small bob cat or loader. Garden tractor will be better then nothing.

Nah. We are strictly manual and very basic here. Shovels, hoe, tool with prongs kinda like a hoe-don’t know what you call it, and rakes, couple of small hand shovels, some clippers.
Once had a gizmo that aerated the ground, but Hubby broke it.
We had a light frost this morning but I don’t see any damage done. I continue to plant winter cover crop at this LATE date but the weather is gorgeous and it feels good to be able to get outside and away from the Ritas of the world...
When the Rita’s of the world show up I usually just have a beer or a glass of hard cider or some cranberry mead. The world they come from is not the same as mine.
LOL. Ain’t it the truth! Always nice to get away from stinging critters of all sizes and types. If the weather holds I may go ahead and plant some more cover crops too.
I still have a few spaces that I was going to transplant some stuff for winter gardening experiment, but it would be so much easier to just do the cover crop, and the shorter the days the shorter my energy. LOL.
Mom called them Winter Onions. Got a start last year and they are doing well. They need to be weeded, but I’ve been concerned about disturbing the soil around them....Any ideas?

My Neighbor planted some Heirloms from seed this year and they didn’t do much...
I decided to dig up that one mater and bring it in... I have a couple smaller bellpepper plants that I am going to dig up as well.
My Neighbor told me I could come get the tiller anytime I wanted but he is moving accross town.
My okra was pitiful this year. I didn’t get it in until late march I need to do better this year..
I have never had anyluck with lettuce or cabbage.. but I will try again and I was too late to get any onion sets so i am still looking. I would like to get them in the ground pretty quick.
I sure hope it don’t freeze for long maybe just one night. But a freeze may kill off some of the bugs too.
I discovered many years ago that if I wash my fruits and veggies thoroughly, they taste better, especially true of leafy veggies.
I was stunned when i read that post! (The analogy is that someone who doesn’t like cornflakes feels it necessary to pee in MY bowl of cereal!)
Since I was widowed and lost my home and live in a tiny apartment now, I don’t have my lovely vegetable garden anymore.
However, I still grow aloe and herbs in pots on my steps, and love this thread.

Maybe it was because today is Pearl Harbor Day. A sneak attack? I dunno. Unprecidented for the garden thread.
Sorry to hear about your spouse and garden. Granny had to give up the 20 acre farm when Gramps passed away. She had a tiny house and yard in the city afterwards. She made due with what she had to work with.
One thing was a bunch of wild grapes and blackberries, so she still made some great jams for Christmas gifts.
