SANTA CLARA -- Alex Smith got right to the point Thursday.
"It sucks," he said. "I don't know what else to say."
Speaking for the first time since 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed Colin Kaepernick's "hot hand" would start at quarterback Sunday at St. Louis, the demoted Smith appeared agitated over once again losing a job that's repeatedly been swiped from his grasp since he was drafted first overall in 2005.
"I feel the only thing I did to lose my job was get a concussion," said Smith, who sustained that brain trauma Nov. 11 during the second quarter of a 24-24 tie with the Rams.
Smith did not, however, blast Harbaugh's communication methods.
"We sat down and talked. It wasn't a one-sentence thing," Smith said. "He explained where he was coming from, felt it was a difficult situation but wanted to go in this direction."
Did Smith try to talk Harbaugh out of starting Kaepernick for a third straight game?
"No, I mean at this point, what's talk going to do?" Smith responded. "I felt he made up his mind. He's not a guy who didn't put thought into it already."
In his last full outing, Smith completed 18 of 19 passes in a 24-3 win at Arizona, earning him a first-career NFC Offensive Player of the Week award. Dating back to halftime of an Oct. 18 win over Seattle, Smith is 35 of 38 for 385 yards with five touchdowns and one interception.
"It's tough. You state your case with your play, and I feel I've done that," said Smith, who leads the NFL with a 70.0 completion percentage and ranks fifth with a 104.1 passer rating.

Tells you something.
I remember when Kaepernick was a freshman at Stanford and beat USC by the score of 14-13. It was considered to be a huge upset.
After the game, the sports journalist on the field asked to speak to Harbaugh. He pointed at Kaepernick and said, Speak to him. He did it. Not me, or words to that effect.
You don't mention the year you think you remembering this happening.
My data comes from the stanford website: http://www.gostanford.com/sports/m-footbl/stats/2007-2008/teamstat.html
2004 USC 31 Stanford 28
2005 USC 51 Stanford 21
2006 USC 42 Stanford 0
2007 Stanford 24 USC 23
2008 USC 45 Stanford 23
OK. So no Stanford 14-13 victories over USC in time frame of Colin potentially at Stanford under Harbaugh, who came to Stanford in 2007. T Pritchard was the QB who beat USC in 2007.
The reason no pundit has mentioned Harbaugh's prior relationship with Kaepernick at Stanford is primarily because he did not attend Stanford under Harbaugh. I checked the rosters as well during the timeframes above. No Colin.
I would love to know what your mistaken memory actually refers back to, though. Were you drinking more in those days? (just kidding around)
“Well take him!
Signed still missing Kurt Warner in Arizona”
Oh, heck YEAH we will. Here in AZ we are in one of the Chinese Hells: The Hell of Perpetual Quarterback Mediocrity.
Matt took the Texans to the playoffs last year. maybe the better question is where have you been?
The Dolphins also signed Chad Johnson. They aren’t that bright. Smith is a solid game managing QB. The problem is he doesn’t have the deep ball to bring you from behind, and he can’t scramble. Give him a good line, solid receivers and a running game and he won’t lose games for you, which is why he’s done well under Harbaugh. You can win a SB with a QB like Smith, the Ravens did. Nobody will ever win a SB with somebody like Garrard, he’s a hot and cold QB whose hot has reduced to tepid.
Looking forward to the playoffs. Let's see if Shaub can seal the deal.
Considering that I have tickets to see the Rams vs the 9ers on Sunday, I am happy with this news :)
I hope you have a better time when I did. I saw the Rams in 2003 against the Cowboys. I was in Row VV in the corner. Warner got injured on the opposite end of the field and I couldn’t even tell. The Cowboys won on a last second field goal, and the visitors fans taunted the home team fans outside of the Dome. They are like Grateful Dead fans, but less polite.
GO RAMS!
Not starting your best players would be unfair to everyone in the organization. That would suck worse.
This is in regards to Kurt Warner. My son and I went to Rams training camp the year after they won the super bowl. After training in the hot sun all day, Kurt Warner had a table and chair brought out, took a seat and talked and signed for every fan for free. My son was only 5 but he remembers that Kurt Warner said “I like your hat” (the hat said 1 cross plus 3 nails = 4 given). To this day, Kurt is still a stand up man.
Can't catch a break? I think he's had more breaks than any QB in the history of the NFL. The 49ers kept him for a 7th season after being terrible for 6 years. I defy you to name any other QB who lasted as long with one team through such terrible performance. Even Al Davis gave up on Jamarcus Russell way sooner than that. Every year, he was supposed to get dropped, and they kept him. He got Mike Nolan and Mike Singletary fired, because they stuck by him. In 2011, they minimized their offense in such a way he could play, but mostly they won in spite of him, not because of him. In the off season, not one since team wanted Smith. (The Dolphins worked him out, and then went screaming in the other direction. After hearing about the workout, Seattle cancelled their workout with Smith, and signed Flynn, who had one good game, to a large contract. Smith had more lives than a sack of cats.
May I remind everyone, Joe Montana lost his job because of injury, and he was the greatest QB ever.I don't know what blackmail material Smith has on the Yorks, but it must be something terrible.
[Let me just say, I only oppose Smith as a player. He seems like a very nice guy, and I think he's great everywhere else besides the field]
