SANTA CLARA -- Alex Smith got right to the point Thursday.
"It sucks," he said. "I don't know what else to say."
Speaking for the first time since 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed Colin Kaepernick's "hot hand" would start at quarterback Sunday at St. Louis, the demoted Smith appeared agitated over once again losing a job that's repeatedly been swiped from his grasp since he was drafted first overall in 2005.
"I feel the only thing I did to lose my job was get a concussion," said Smith, who sustained that brain trauma Nov. 11 during the second quarter of a 24-24 tie with the Rams.
Smith did not, however, blast Harbaugh's communication methods.
"We sat down and talked. It wasn't a one-sentence thing," Smith said. "He explained where he was coming from, felt it was a difficult situation but wanted to go in this direction."
Did Smith try to talk Harbaugh out of starting Kaepernick for a third straight game?
"No, I mean at this point, what's talk going to do?" Smith responded. "I felt he made up his mind. He's not a guy who didn't put thought into it already."
In his last full outing, Smith completed 18 of 19 passes in a 24-3 win at Arizona, earning him a first-career NFC Offensive Player of the Week award. Dating back to halftime of an Oct. 18 win over Seattle, Smith is 35 of 38 for 385 yards with five touchdowns and one interception.
"It's tough. You state your case with your play, and I feel I've done that," said Smith, who leads the NFL with a 70.0 completion percentage and ranks fifth with a 104.1 passer rating.

How about, "They pay me seven figures whether I can play or not. How sweet is that?"
Whiner.
Alex Smith: You suck.
You sure this is the website for you?
Oh, not at all - I can certainly understand his desire to compete. Corssing over to whining is unmanly, though - suck it up, be grateful for your outsized salary, and work to get back on the field.
I love a god pouter.. he got a concussion and loss his job.. what’s he pulling in this year?
I would think a coach would like the fastest horse running to be in the race.. besides funny things happen on the field.. be ready. ask Lefwich.
good
I would add that Jim Harbaugh is one of the biggest jerks ever to graduate from That University Up North, and that’s saying a lot.
saw an interview and he sure thought he should have been the starter as soon as he was cleared.. whiny, ehhh.. more .. stuned.. ;-]
Smith is a good, though pedestrian, NFL quarterback assisted immeasurably by a great 49er defense. SF fans have long been begging for a QB that matches their D. Kaepernick doesn’t just have a “hot hand,” he can improvise and capably run when necessary, two qualities Smith lacks. Having watched him closely since his Nevada days, it’s obvious Kaepernick is the real deal.
We’ll take him!
Signed “still missing Kurt Warner in Arizona”
:)
Let’s say you are handsomely-paid to shoot guns for a living, and you love shooting guns. Someone tells you that you cannot shoot guns anymore, but will still get paid. The suck, or not?
Why is he a jerk, because he’s not sensitive? The guy has turned around a losing 49er team in short notice.
Bravo. [Not sarcasm.]
Maybe if Alex thinks his situation sucks he should realize that things could be worse and he could be an Oakland Raida. :P
I’m not particularly responding to your post. I’m only using your post to submit this to everyone:
I suppose it has gone over everyone’s heads that Harbaugh coached Kaepernick during Kaepernick’s freshman year at Stanford. I haven’t heard even one sports journalist to say this.
After his freshman year he transferred to Nevada. I have never heard an explanation as to why he transferred to Nevada. It could have been that Kaepernick saw Andrew Luck staring over his shoulder.
Also, Harbaugh thought a lot of Kaepernick even in his freshman year at Stanford. I was not surprised when San Franciso traded up to get him. Harbaugh saw something in him that no one else saw.
No, it's because he went to Michigan.
OTOH, maybe Smith wouldn’t throw away games as quickly as Carson Palmer does...
