Is that why Byrd, the lovable KKK Democrat, was in the government until his death?
There was a bunch of democrats who switched parties after Kennedy outlawed segregation, maybe that’s what they were referring to?
I mean, some people like to say Republicans were “liberal” because they supported Industrialism and Capitalism.
Bourbon Democrats in the South were very much right wing in that they wanted to preserve the landed Planter aristocracy and agricultural interests.
However, I don’t really think going back to the 19th Century is really relevant in terms of modern politics.
Take ‘em to see Abraham Lincoln the Vampire Hunter and show them what Lincoln did to “Obama ‘Rats/moochers/OWS types” back in his day. LOL!

This is the old "neoconservative" ploy.
What actually happened is that when the socialist effectively took over the democrat party many of the patriotic American democrats moved over to the Republican party. None of the Republicans became democrats.
An example would be Ronald Reagan who famously said " I didn't leave the democrat party, they left me".
Look at which party blacks voted for after the Civil War. Look at which party they overwhelmingly support now.
Sorry, but I think there was a general switch c.1900-1920.
This is an item of faith among the Left, that Republicans became racist for courting the working class White vote in the South starting in the 60s. As with many items of Leftist conventional “wisdom”, it is pure crap.

The Democrats haven’t changed at all, it’s always been about race with them. The races may have changed , but from the “Trail of Tears” to slavery and the KKK and now with race quotas and affirmative action the progressives have always pushed one race over another. This current bunch just does a better job of dressing their racism up as “compassion”.

Right around the time the Democrat Woodrow Wilson instituted segregation and reinvigorated the KKK.
Patronage was the life blood of the Democrat party from the time of Andrew Jackson; entitlements are patronage writ large, never so explicitly than now, when the patronage “job” is to show up and vote one day every four years. On the other hand , the Republicans have always been for “free labor;” never more explicitly than in Lincoln’s time, but the line is becoming clearer again.
This guy says that the reason for the civil war was to preserve the union. And he said the union was in jeopardy due to the international bankers who did not want the U.S. to be able to print it's own 'greenback' currency. Apparently, the bankers who print the money want a monopoly, globally.

There is more to it that just race.
What has happened in the last generation is a trend toward outsourcing American jobs.
This is a loss for all Americans. Yet we as Republicans have supported this right up to the point is has now cost us the Whitehouse.
Granted the media bias has been particularly heavy this time, and I believe we have not actually lost yet. At least not permanently.
But we lost the last election. And it was because we had no counterpoint.
It is important for Republicans to get out of the outsourcing mode, and start finding ways to build up America.

The switcheroo started with FRD and finally finished when LBJ and MLK Jr. struck a deal to pass the Civil Rights Act by the ending of the democRATS opposition to it. And LBJ’s Great Society he said “ I’ll have them niggers voting for democRAT for the next two hundred years”. Damned if he wasn’t right.
In disgust the Strom Thurmond’s and a few others became Republicans.
That was the end of the Republicans.
We should simply admit that now and move on and create a new party that embraces liberty not socialism lite.
That’s a pretty common meme from the Dems.
