The original “The Thing” (the one with the then unknown James Arness in the title role), which scared the cr*p out of everybody in the early ‘50’s - in seventh grade you were considered a hero if you went to see it and showed up alive in school the next morning - or better yet see it at the matinee so you didn’t have to go home in the dark after the show - watch the skies, watch the skies......

Lots of great movies here, but I can't believe that nobody listed the classic, "SpaceBalls!"

A Boy and his Dog.

The film ‘Surrogates’ was sci-fi, and disturbing.

2001 A Space Odyssey (I'm a Stanley Kubrick junkie)

I also liked "The Adventures of Pluto Nash" (2002) where it featured an independent, libertarian based moon colony and the Earth was more socialist.

"Mission to Mars" (2000)
"The Last Starfighter" (1984)
"The Wraith" (1986) - Starred Charlie Sheen, maybe not hardcore SF, he comes back from the dead to aid one of his friends whi is bullied by one gang, but the car he drove was very science fiction.
"Conquest of Mars" (1955)
"The Black Hole" (1979)

Sorry I went past three, but I get carried away, I like a lot of SF.

Genuine Science Fiction? I tried for the ambitious, even if most folks think they’re failures.

2001: A Space Odyssey

Blade Runner

A.I. (Yes, THAT A.I.)

All three were met with either lukewarm receptions or outright hatred when they premiered. 2001 is now regarded as a masterpiece. Blade Runner is also highly regarded. A.I. is still regarded unfavorably (especially for its ending) but I find it fascinating.

Runners-up:

Planet of the Apes (Just the original.)

Alien (This one is kinda marginal where science is considered. But very believable.)

Solaris (I’ve only seen the Steven Soderbergh version)

Moon (Unfortunately, you can only really watch it once. Maybe twice.)

Silent Running (Bruce Dern plays another nut. But I think the Valley Forge ranks up there with the Discovery for interesting, hard-science ships.

Anything on Mystery Science Theater 3000.

They are all too good to choose between.

Terminator is my favorite but I did googled to see if Lord of the Rings, which is also a favorite, was sci fi and according to some, it is.

I did like Promethius. Not my top three though.

From what I’ve watched more than any others...

5th Element and any other Bruce Willis sci fi. The man has a brilliant agent.

Dune - any of them

I burned out on Blade Runner and. Can’t watch it anymore.

Brazille

But really, trying to narrow it down to three? Impossible!

Love to watch The Thing on a hot summer day. Escape from New York later that night followed by Big Trouble in Little China.

Omega Man with the Mountain Man himself. Soylent Green.

You just have to watch them grouped by stars.

Anybody see that B movie Apollo 18 yet? Gave a feel for being stuffed in a lunar landing module like no other.
