You cant collect unemployment if you’ve been fired. Laid off yes, fired, no. We checked with our legal guys.

You better double-check your legal advice. Fired employees can still receive unemployment if they are not fired “with cause”. You had better be ready to answer to an appeals panel, giving some solid reasons for the termination, or he will be drawing benefits...
