Google celebrates Bob Ross's 70th birthday!
Google | October 29, 2012

Google is celebrating what would be the late Bob Ross's 70th birthday, Monday, October 29, with a special doodle!

Bob Ross was so mellow, he could lower the blood pressure of Chris Matthews at a Romney-Ryan victory party. Watching Bob Ross would transport your brainwaves to a peaceful landscape of little trees wherever you want them to be. The Bobness would take you to a place where there are no mistakes, only happy accidents. Bob Ross was so laid back, that when he died, people asked, "How could they tell?"

“maybe a happy little tree lives right over here...”

It was Bill Alexander who painted the “Happy little cloud floating by”.

You really could not tell the difference between a thirty minute Bill Alexander painting and a thirty minute Bob Ross painting.

I did not care for his art but he did get people to try and paint. Some may have finally developed their own style and left Bob in the dust.

1 block from my home here in Tainan, Taiwan, there is a restaurant dedicated to Bob Ross.

Pictures of him all over the walls. Video screens (large) playing re-runs of his drawing show, "bob Ross"-type pictures on the walls. Painting accessories, easels, palettes, brushes, around the place as decorations.

Place is named "Whiskers" in honor of his facial hair.

Its a weird weird world.

I actually own a Bill Alexander piece, and there is quite a bit of difference in their art. Ross' work though a little more crisp and animated, does not have Alexander's aura and feel on a landscape.

With that. Both used the "wet on wet" technique (Alexander invented). Problem is Alexander does not have the recognition factor.

The Alexander piece I own is probably worth no more than $500. Ross is worth 10X for his iconic value alone. Just as Picasso is worth 1000X for the same reason.

Years ago, (Back when there was Music still on MTV and Michael Jackson had yet to be abducted by Aliens and subjected to disfigurement via medical procedures) my wife and I both worked at a local furniture store. In the main showroom there were racks of TVs constantly running. When it came time for Bob Ross the whole store would congregate in the main room and lounge on the Sofas and watch Bob.

It was like a meditation class and a nap all rolled into one! I sure miss Bob, he put the "Z" in Zen!

If anyone is interested, here is some young jaw dropping talent. Don't worry about buying one of his works. You have to put in for a drawing with 500 other people, just to get a chance to pay gallery price.

I love Bob Ross. A couple years ago I wrote a comic short story about him:

Wonder where all the tapes of his shows are, I’d love to get my hands on them and watch all of them again.

When I was in high school, the favored artist was Big Daddy Roth. A lot of wanna be artists used to imitate him with carvings in the desks. One such carving somebody carved into my algebra class desk. It was so funny that it cracked me up just looking at it. Obscene as hell but also quite funny. I better not even describe it but Big Daddy Roth was the art inspiration in my high school.
