First time for this newspaper since 1972. Iowa is a “swing state” and this is very good news.
Newspaper endorsements don’t mean much anymore. Fifty years ago....that might sway five percent of the state voting population. Today? Maybe a quarter of one percent of the voting population. Who reads newspapers anymore?
I think the news here is that it shows the state of the voters in Iowa. Not that the endorsement will sway a lot of voters. But, very good news, indeed!
I lived in Iowa from 1974 to 2002. The Des Moines Register is really the only major newspaper there, sort of a New York Times for a state. This is REALLY big.
I like the WSJ because their policy is not to endorse anyone.
you can say that about a paper who for decades endorses the same party.. but when the biggest paper in the state flips it’s usual party endorsement all of a sudden it makes news and people do pay attention to it
The late Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Clark Mollenhoff would be proud of the Register.
Clark: one of the last of the honest journalists and a nice guy to boot.
In a close race in a swing state you take what ever help or endorsement you can get.
GREAT news!! The Des Moines Register is a super liberal paper. I almost didn’t believe it when I first saw the headline on Drudge!
The newspapers are seeing the writing on the wall, it looks like it will be a big win.
The best thing is Obama begged for the endorsement and they told him to shove it.
Ten months ago this newspaper endorsed former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for the Republican nomination for president. An overarching consideration was which of the partys candidates could we see occupying the White House, and there was no question that Romney was qualified for the job.
Now, in the closing days of the general election campaign, the question is which of the two contenders deserves to be the next president of the United States.
Both President Barack Obama and Governor Romney are superbly qualified. Both are graduates of the Harvard University Law School who have distinguished themselves in government, in public service and in private life. Both are devoted husbands and fathers.
American voters are deeply divided about this race. The Registers editorial board, as it should, had a vigorous debate over this endorsement. Our discussion repeatedly circled back to the nations single most important challenge: pulling the economy out of the doldrums, getting more Americans back in the workforce in meaningful jobs with promising futures, and getting the federal government on a track to balance the budget in a bipartisan manner that the country demands.
Which candidate could forge the compromises in Congress to achieve these goals? When the question is framed in those terms, Mitt Romney emerges the stronger candidate.
The former governor and business executive has a strong record of achievement in both the private and the public sectors. He was an accomplished governor in a liberal state. He founded and ran a successful business that turned around failing companies. He successfully managed the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
Romney has made rebuilding the economy his No. 1 campaign priority and rightly so.
In itself, people may not be swayed by it. However, an endorsement from an establish ‘mainstream’ liberal newspaper sends a message to voters who are tired of 0bama but are afraid that Romney may be ‘too extreme’ that it’s actually fine to vote for Romney.
You might say this is... [wait for it] ... UNEXPECTED!
to boot ping !
Can’t remember the last time I heard that.
(I wonder where that expression comes from ?)
Register had earlier endorsed all the Rat congressional candidates in the state.
Iowa is so middle America and such a farm state I fail to see how they would vote for Obama in 2012. They were too nice and post-racial, and soured on Bush so Obama won in 2008. But twice for Obama? I can’t see it
It’ll be on the front page I assume. That’ll get read since that’s all the average bonehead independant has the attention span for.
