Yes, it's an excellent book.
Sad that Mr. Lomax recently passed away, and won't see the movie based on his book. I'm definitely putting it on my list to watch when it's released on DVD. The movie "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence," starring David Bowie is another excellent movie about British POW's in Japanese prisons.

I also recommend Ship of Ghosts. It is the story of the survivors of the USS Houston and the 131st Field Artillery Battalion, 36th Infantry Division. These men were sent to prison labor camps throughout Southeast Asia, including the infamous Burma-Thailand Railroad.
